Sounds a canny day out mate, good read too, quite informative to me as well. I try to avoid voyagers like the plague, however if your travelling down from Gods Country, the early start invariably means a voyager. I'm hoping by the time I go down there, the 09.42 is still booked for XC HST.

You'd be better off having a few days focused solely on the Midlands, and to properly enjoy a WMDR you need to spend the whole day on it. Especially for someone who isn't from the area so needs everything!

That's exactly what my intention, go down the day before, start the day WMDR at the very first knocking's next day, back to base for 2nd night home the following afternoon, basically trying to score whatever whenever. Very uncharttered waters for me too.
Any suggestions for a base camp folks? Brum Crewe or Stafford?

Tough call on where to set up base camp (I must say, glad someone else uses that!) really, I've not found anywhere I can recommend yet in the Midlands. I will say that it's not worth trying Britannia Hotel, Wolverhampton as it's a lousy place. I know blindtraveller would recommend Rollason Wood Hotel, Erdington but I wasn't a fan when I stayed.

Birmingham will no doubt be your best location due to being in the centre of everything. Comfort Inn and Holiday Inn are very close by on Hill Street (south side of Birmingham New Street), and Premier Inn have a hotel literally just around the corner from New Street station. As for independants, I was going to stay at one near Tyseley on a previous trip, was well priced at £25 and all I can remember right now is that it began with a G. Wasn't far from Acocks Green station too.

Do some shopping around but do read several of the reviews for the different places to properly get an idea of what they're like!

Been a little quiet, eh? I've not really had a chance to type out a full report for Cheshire but I may as well fill you in on a few other recent moves.

Last Saturday I bit the bullet and did the Cumbrian Coast Line through to Barrow. It was gorgeous weather and the scenery was stunning. It was a 156 both ways (156480), which was lightly loaded St Bees-Millom, busier on the north/south ends of the line. I even had 156s Newcastle-Carlisle both ways (156463 out, 156490 back), bonus!

I had a day off yesterday so I snapped up some £2.95 advances on Tuesday and went to Carlisle again on two lightly loaded late morning/early afternoon trains. The 1022 to Carlisle was worked by 156469 and the 1332 back by 156479.

Well it's been a while, eh? I've currently got 14 GCSE exams starting Tuesday until June 22nd so i've not really had time to write out any reports. I plan on resuming with my first planned trip after my exams on June 29th which is to Inverness and back. Other planned moves thereafter-

13-14/7/15- London (More tourist slanted but ample rail moves too)
17/7/15- Stockport-Stalybridge, ATW 67s (Chester-Manchester), Dinting-Hadfield.
21/7/15- Free Northern Pass so a long day with the intention of clearing the Todmorden Curve, Colne, Preston-Bolton, Knottingley-Goole and Selby-Sherburn In Elmet.

Productive is right there, hopefully plenty of winners were had! A lot of mileage over the 3 days by the looks of it too, it's surprising how much a few BSBs between Haymarket and Waverley can build up the figures fast!

I remember my 2001 GCSE exams fairly well (not what the papers were on mind!), it's a tough few weeks so I totally understand the lack of your presence on the forum recently. Just don't do what I did at the time and refuse to revise anything! It might be jammed in your head already but a quick flick through the books can't hurt.

Well actually if you're not careful it could. Revise yes but don't push yourself too hard, it may well all come crashing down and go belly up otherwise. Take regular breaks from it all. Oh, and don't do what I did when I had the tests with FGW in 2008 (and yes, I did revise for that!) and stay up until silly o'clock and then drown yourself in coffee or other caffeine sources. If you haven't suffered the caffeine come-down before, take it from me it's far less than pleasant, your mood will bury itself in the ground until you refuel on more caffeine, and of course your sleeping pattern will be hugely affected. I've been addicted to Monster and Rockstar in the past, it took a LOT of doing to get off them, so please for God's sake don't get that way yourself!

You probably know all that already anyway to be fair! I hope the above is of at least some inspiration and advision of some level. I do however have one GCSE Survival Top Tip:

If you suffer with hayfever, make sure you've got a full packet of tissues with you. You may well be inside, away from pollen etc, but don't underestimate the power of the colour of the exam paper! I do speak from experience, I remember my school tie was hugely soaked in nasal fluid before the end of a science exam. As soon as I finished it and got rid of it, I was fine. I'd also been fine before I went in, so it's always been blamed on the deep purple with black type of the exam paper. No idea why it should have affected me of course!

OK, two Top Tips actually:

Whatever you do, even if your favourite, lucky or even just your current pen is working absolutely fine beforehand, do make sure you've got a few spares with you. Again I speak from experience, both from exams and from the beyond irritating experience on my 2012 ALR!

I hope you've got a good trip forthcoming to celebrate the end of the exams, you'll definitely want to reward yourself for surviving all that stress!

Under the previous franchise this took me five minutes online.
The new set-up requires them to ring me (office hours only) to complete the purchase.
Nearly a week on and I'm still waiting.
A complaint e-mail has gone in.
No reply to that yet, either.

I've no advice to give regarding exams, I can barely remember taking them.
When I took mine Margaret Thatcher ruled the country and we still had 'O' levels

Oh yeah, but I'd much rather buy it online as it's (usually) much quicker and easier.
Why they've set it up like they have, I've no idea.
It's almost as if the new franchise doesn't want to sell rovers and is going out of its way to make it difficult to get them.

Well I've came up with how I'm rewarding myself for my exams.

Mashing a North East and East Midlands Rover together.

The bashing will be taking place in the Midlands but it works out cheaper at £71 for the week to just use the North East Rover as a means of getting to/from Doncaster and Sheffield.

I have the Sunday (26/7) worked out as:

Newcastle-Newark
Newark-Cleethorpes
Cleethorpes-Doncaster
Doncaster-Peterborough
Peterborough-Nuneaton
Nuneaton-Tamworth
Tamworth-Derby
Derby-Newcastle
(From 0925 to 2131 approx)

I've worked out that

Newcastle-Sheffield
Sheffield-Leicester
Leicester-Bedford
Bedford-Corby
Corby-Bedford
Bedford-Bletchley
Bletchley-Rugby
Rugby-Tamworth
Tamworth-Derby

Seven consecutive days will be tiring but the Midlands is near undiscovered!

Sunday looks like it'd be 640ish miles and the Monday 610. Aye it'll be a monster alright. On the Saturday planning on being out early doors and perhaps heading to Brum for a proper bash (so a West Midlands Day Ranger would suffice if I didn't mind having to be on trains calling at Tamworth)

A late finish wouldn't be too hard (2144 into Newcastle probably) as the Sunday wouldn't need me to get up til 7:45.

I'm 16 and traveling solo, not possible Also rovers not valid til 0845/0900 and I have a week to clear the lot. The £140 for the week is fine in terms of affordability though

I'll be aiming to position myself for XC HSTs (2042 arrival at Newcastle I believe) to make it less arduous doing moves like Newcastle to Derby, or getting East Coast services.

Anyway, more mileage in the bag too

I maybe wrong but go to Palma city and get the train, its absolute dog years, since I done it, was a single tram like thing with wooden benches on it, if I remember rightly, which probably isn't, I was in my early 20's and I was on a lads holiday. I've got the first day of the Rover sorted then, only one of two days when I plan going out of area as such.

I've bought 2x £2.80 advances Derby-Birmingham Stns just to save myself a change at Derby or a scenic tour via Leeds on a service with a Tamworth call.

So i'm out on the 0623 to Birmingham in at 0928, back on the 1830 to Newcastle for 2144. Gives me a nice 8-9hrs on a WMDR.

The Friday (31st Jul) will have the inclusion of a Bedford-London return so I can clear the MML while i'm in the area. Out on a 222, and back on a 319/377/387 to Luton Airport Pkwy for a 222 is the plan.
