I went for a proper bash today, good few shacks scored leaving only 5 left to do on the network!

Doing 2 more tomorrow, leaving the hourly served rural shacks for when I'm feeling braver!

I also have 3 or 4 to do on Metro Line 1, but the 90 minute frequency is a bit pathetic!

Here's 2 days of the East Midlands Rover. Not as detailed as usual but hey, it's a start!

Day 2- 26/7/15

We’re starting with day 2 of the Rover, as day 1 wasn’t actually in the Rover area, rather in London.

It was a short drive into town as I made my way to the station for my first service, the 0925 to London Kings Cross which had dud 91132 pushing it. An unreserved pair of seats was sourced for the 150 mile dash south to Newark North Gate, which was also winning shack no. 1 of the day. From here, it was time to get down to business as I awaited the Cleethorpes service. This had quite a healthy crowd as a winning 156413 arrived in from Lincoln, with most passengers being headed to here. It emptied out at Lincoln for us to continue along the rather flat, albeit rather pleasant run to Grimsby Town where we had quite a long dwell time so I grabbed a few photos of the train and the station before jumping back on for us to run through the rather drab looking Grimsby Docks and New Clee stations before arriving into Cleethorpes 5 up at 1311.

By golly, the heavens had opened! I absolutely legged it to the other platform for a winning pair of 170303 and 170308 for the journey to Doncaster. This was a pretty peaceful journey as far as Scunthorpe where some of the local children/chavs joined us and insisted on being complete pains in the arse to everyone in the carriage. On the approaches to Doncaster, dud 91115 was just approaching the platform, and seeking a chance to avoid a dodgy +7 at Peterborough, I ran across the platform and onto it. It was heaving! An unreserved seat as far as Newark was found where I then found an aisle seat for the run to Grantham where I’d decided on a change of plan.

I tried to find food outside the station but in the end a bottle of Polish fruit juice was all I felt like buying. I trudged my way back up the station in the pouring rain and onto the platform to await the 1436 to Skegness. This was formed of double winners 153326 and 156403, and I opted to sit in the 153 for a bit of noise! One thing that struck me was the sharpness and length of the curve in order to join the Skegness line out of Grantham, before we then continued east through what was again pretty pleasant scenery, albeit a little damp! I bailed at Sleaford as this gave a nice connection heading back over. I took a walk over to the local chippy and a tray of chips were sourced for £1.90, before walking over to the Nottingham platform. I had been previously thinking to myself ‘I wonder if I’ll come across 156498?’ as this was the only EMT 156 I’d previously had, but in Northern guise.

I nervously laughed to myself as the 1539 to Nottingham pulled in, formed of a winning 156411, and erm, dud 156498. This had a fantastic guard on board who was one of the best I’d ever encountered, very friendly and professional bloke and he even issued someone’s tickets to Ramsgate for a later date. We reversed at Grantham for us to then continue onwards up more winning track to Nottingham. We called only at Bingham, and were shortly arriving into a soaking wet Nottingham, where the only real option was to head back to Grantham so I could scratch the line linking Doncaster to Selby!

I huddled into the shelter and got talking to a Sikh gent who was heading back to London for work purposes, and so we spent the journey onboard a winning 158813 discussing all manner of subjects before we parted ways with a handshake as I aimed to head north to Doncaster and he joined his train south. Double duds 43251 and 43317 were working the Hull service this evening, and I joined Coach G for a peaceful journey northwards, where we arrived into Doncaster at 1905. Short fester here for a winning 180109 which took me forwards to Selby. These struck me as being very nice units indeed, having never really used one on a journey exceeding 10 miles. The journey was very swift and relaxing as we arrived into Selby ready for me to starting heading home.

The train to York was formed of a very quiet dud 158815, which managed to get into York at 2021, enabling me to source a takeaway burger and chips before returning for the 2053 to Newcastle which was formed of double duds 43305 and 43306, getting me into Newcastle for 2149.

Total Mileage- 563mi 64ch
Total Winners- 8
New shacks- Newark Northgate, Grantham, Grimsby Town, Cleethorpes, Sleaford (5)
Total cost- £27.79 (As % of rover plus food cost)

--------------------------------------------------

Day 3- 27/7/15

This was a pretty late start by my standards as I positioned myself at the Central for the 0859 to London Kings Cross, formed of last night’s duds 43305 and 43306. I could only find an aisle seat, but that would suffice for the 55 minute journey south to York where I had to change for an onward service to Doncaster, the 1003 to London Kings Cross which had a dud 91126 on the back. It was a very peaceful journey in Coach H as we raced southwards to Doncaster where I was to join the 1042 TPE. I also had the option to leg it for the 1026 stopper, but as this was formed of a mega dud 142020, I passed on it.

This didn’t quite go as planned as the TPE didn’t arrive until 1055, and it was completely rammed and formed of a fresh dud 170303. I had a seat but offered it to an elderly woman who was struggling to stand before positioning myself in the area by the doors for the very uncomfortable journey to Sheffield. It was a relief to be leaving the train, where I then headed for double winners 222014 and 222017 for the journey to Leicester. The Meridians struck me as being a world away from their Voyager counterparts, making the 66 mile run a pretty pleasant one, and it also presented the first of many chances to take a look at the variety of locos stabled in the depot just south of Derby. We arrived into Leicester at around 1225, where there was a short wait for another winner in the form of 222016 to take me south to Kettering.

It was a nifty +3 onto a winning 222009 up to Corby before there was a swift change of direction back south onboard the same unit as far as Bedford. I was now an hour ahead, so it was time to work out an alternative plan as there wasn’t much point being back in Newcastle at 1945! A plan was soon made and I found myself on the approach to Bedford where I took the chance to grab a shot of an incoming 319 pair before heading over to a winning 153354 for the journey to Bletchley. This was a thrashy little stagger, lots of stations to call at with quite a healthy load! I now planned to hang around and see what turned up on the Southern service to Milton Keynes as this was a nice chance to scratch a few 377s between the most northerly two stations that Southern must serve! Double winners 377203 and 377206 produced for the short run where I proceeded out of the station to go grab a donut from the local Greggs. This was a bit of a faff as the gate rejected my ticket then my railcard was then rather rudely demanded, which is a new one as I’ve never been asked for a railcard at a gateline!

However, on returning, it seems that the station is well frequented by chancers, as the same gent was dealing with three guys who looked about 20 travelling on child tickets. Seems he wasn’t up for taking any nonsense that day! I headed down for the 1519 Crewe which was formed of a winning 350116, a very busy service but a window seat was sourced for what was quite a sprightly run via Weedon and onwards through to Tamworth. I then swapped platforms and jumped onboard another winning 350123 back south to Nuneaton where I had some time to grab a couple of provisions from the local Asda before joining a winning 170519 to Leicester. I had originally intended to join an HST to East Midlands Parkway before dropping back onto the stopper to Nottingham, but the service to Nottingham, formed of double winners 43046 and 43066, was far too pleasant and quiet for me to leave and I continued all the way through to Nottingham on it.

This now gave me a good hour or so before there was a train heading to Grantham, so I joined a winning 222102 for a shack scratching move to Beeston. Only 4 coaches and a pretty busy train, but I was soon off and joining double winners 222018 and 222010 for the journey back to Nottingham. Not bad for about 25 minutes work, eh? We now had issues though. My intended 1837 to Norwich was increasing in delay and was now due at 1854. I only had something like a +20 so by the time the rear unit was detached it was going to be a connection out of the window. I instead chanced the 1844 to Skegness, which happily was a winner in the form of 156415. This was a slower run than the Norwich however and it turned out to only be something like a +3 onto the 1928 to Newcastle, a very convenient service being the only one of a handful to go direct there rather than having to change at Newark, Doncaster or York.

It was running 18 late so no need to panic in the end. I sat around the station awaiting its arrival which presented me with a dud 91113 but a carriage with about 3 people in it! This was a peak time departure from London! It did have a strange calling pattern (Peterborough, Grantham, York, Northallerton, Darlington, Durham, Newcastle) and it was an extra service, leaving at 1819 from London but I was expecting it to be far busier! Still, I wasn’t complaining and we raced north, arriving into Newcastle around 2145.

Total Mileage- 607mi 11ch
Total winners- 16
New shacks- Kettering, Corby, Bedford, Bletchley, Milton Keynes Central, Tamworth, Nuneaton, Beeston (8)
Total Cost- £27.37

Sounds like a very varied day :)

Good luck with the shacks on the northern end of Thameslink within the zones, If you get stuck at Hendon, the northern line station is around a 15 minute walk away (passing several shops).

Ah yes, I was looking that up. Hopefully I won't need to make that walk :)

Cheers! Hopefully gonna continue tomorrow, or I might do today's trip while it's fresh in my mind!

6 winners out of a possible 9 on the Thameslink, and it's now out on a 442 to Gatwick!

Oooh, some Plastic Pig action.
Very nice.

Anyway, a good read there. I spy a couple of my EMT requirements, including one of my last two 222s (222016).
I'm looking forward to the next part.

London- 18/8/15

A small change from the advertised programming here as I bring you yesterday’s visit to London! This is set to be the last trip for a while so I decided to make it count and set myself a few goals.

Firstly, get a 442 on the Gatwick Express. They’re set to be replaced in December so this would be my final ever chance to get one on such a service, and despite some forum member’s aspirations to see them as the definitive answer to every rolling stock shortage ever, I’m personally a little more pessimistic so I wasn’t risking them never seeing use again  Next was to go clear some 319s on the North Thameslink and clear all the shacks in the process, as I only needed the ones north of West Hampstead in the zones. After that, get all the shacks Norwood Junction-New Cross Gate as I needed all of them except Sydenham, followed by a second stab at 313 bashing, getting the last of the shacks on the Hertford Loop within the zones (except Crew’s Hill) and the last ones north of Finsbury Park on the ‘core’. This was easily achievable with a lot of time to spare meaning that I could probably squeeze more in if I hurried up and the network was playing ball.

And with that, it was off to the station far earlier than I needed to be, at a time of 5:45. This was due to me opting for a lift and the first bus didn’t get to Newcastle until 6:10, which was a little risky as it still required a run across the city due to me no longer having cheap Metro travel  I headed for Platform 3 outside the closed first class lounge and used the free wifi to kill some time before a dud 91120 rolled in, pushing my MK4 set into the station for the journey to Peterborough. ‘Peterborough?’ Yes, this is due to through advances to London now being nothing short of extortion. It was £41 through and £16.15 with a change at Peterborough. A time penalty of a mere 22 minutes. I found an unreserved seat in Coach B as my reserved one was at a table with 3 other people, and settled down for the journey. I actually caught some shut eye from Northallerton to York as I woke up to people shuffling around at York looking for seats, with naughty me curled up across two! Nobody asked me to move though, so I remained like that as we then proceeded fast to Peterborough, arriving slightly late at 0845.

I noted that the East Midlands set was on the 0902 London, which was irritating as I could’ve booked it for another pound! Never mind, I joined the 0907 to London with another dud (one day I’ll capture more winning 91s!) 91129 pushing the train south. Another service which was quite quiet at the back and completely mobbed in Coaches D-H, and I sourced another unreserved pair of seats for the 52 minute journey south. It was a pleasant run, and we absolutely stormed the whole way, arriving a stonking 5 minutes early just a shade after 0954! It was now over to St Pancras where I knew that I was going to be able to put myself ahead as my plan had me starting at 1024. The first train out was the 1004 Bedford which stopped at West Hampstead, so I leapt onboard. This had dud 387124 leading, but it was a good start with winner 387119 trailing! This was a swift journey which then had me awaiting the 1020 to Luton at West Hampstead. This was another 2 winners in the form of 319426 and 319385 which I took all the way to Elstree and Borehamwood, my first winning shack of the day. Here, I had a +3 (now a +1 due to a minor delay) onto the 1037 Sevenoaks which I made a beeline for. This was a dud 319433 but I jumped on anyway to find that standard was rammed and first class was empty. First class also happened to be declassified on this service to I took a seat in there

I took this service to winning shack number 2, Cricklewood. There was a short wait here for dud 319012 and winner 319006 for the short run up to shack 3, Hendon. I did a linear bash here and awaited the next service, formed of double winners 319422 and 319448 for the short journey to shack 4, Mill Hill Broadway. There was a possible zero minute connection here, which I made by seconds. Happily, this service was formed of double winners 319010 and 319381. 010 was a bit of a time warp with yellow still being quite prevalent in the interior! I took these to West Hampstead where I left the station and headed for the Jubilee Line. This seemed to be well timed as I had a 168 and S8 Stock pass simultaneously either side of me before my 1996 Stock train rolled in for the journey to Green Park, where I took the Victoria Line one stop to Victoria. It was Plastic Pig time.

I must add that I only paid £4.10 for my journey on a Boundary Zone return, far less than what Gatwick Express actually wanted me to pay for their 1-minute-faster-older-train-supreme-experience service. A gent in front of me was quickly refused travel for having a Southern only ticket at the gateline, and told to go catch another train or pay more money. I was let through with a mere glance of my travelcard/BZ6-Gatwick combination to join a winning 442419 on the 1159 to Gatwick. This was a pretty sedate slow run for most of the way but it somehow still kept timings until just outside Horley where we sat for a while before arriving into Gatwick 5 late. It was then over to double winners 387109 and 387120 for the journey back to East Croydon where I picked up a winning 377622 for the run up to shack 5, Brockley. At Brockley I realised that we had a parade of several services within the next 15 minutes, so a linear bash would probably work quite well here. And so, 378145 was taken to Honor Oak Park (no 6), 455840 to Forest Hill, (no 7) and 378220 to Penge West (no 8). All of the aforementioned units also happened to be winners :D.

This just left the awkward Anerley (no.9), which I was taken to by fresh dud 377622. The rain was starting to fall as a winning 378140 took me to Sydenham as I looked for a change of scenery. I leapt over onto the opposite platform for winner 377131 for the journey to shack 10, Gipsy Hill where there was a short wait for double winners 455825 and 455830 to shack 11, Birkbeck. I had meant to join the tram here to Beckenham Junction, but sods law dictated that there was a 16 minute wait so I took the walk to Elmers End instead and joined double winners 376007 and 376013 for the short run to shack 12, Eden Park. My intention here was to scratch a few units as well as St Johns by taking the next service to St Johns, one back to Lewisham then another to London Bridge. However, double winners 376015 and 376024 failed briefly at Elmers End, so I jumped off only for the problem to be rectified straight after and the buggers left! However, double duds 376007 and 376013 were chasing them out, fresh back from Hayes. I joined them again to London Waterloo East as I needed the track that links Ladywell to the mainline (ie the service was avoiding Lewisham). A nice 10 mile run here too which had me at Waterloo East in no time at all. In the end, we also passed 015 and 024 at New Cross, so this service had also been a pretty smart move as they were running 14 late by now!

I meant to kill some time by joining a train for Vauxhall here, but then something caught my eye. Double winners 458014 and 458021 were working the 1550 to Reading! This was surely the last time I’d get to sample a 458/0 before it became a 458/5 so I took it to its first stop, Clapham Junction. With a nice surprise getting my mood up, I now headed for Vauxhall on dud 455715 and winner 455907. It was then a case of taking a quieter than usual (thanks engineering works!) Victoria Line to Finsbury Park where the fun could begin.

First up was winner 313026 and dud 313062 to shack 13 Alexandra Palace where there was a short wait for a cosy single winner 313035 to take me to shack 14, Palmers Green. Apparently we were running early, as my second zero minute connection of the day was made on double winners 313029 and 313049 back to Alexandra Palace where I intended to head for Grange Park. However, another pair of winners in the form of 313018 and 313050 so I took them back to Palmers Green where I could join another pair of winners, 313044 and 313058, for the journey to shack 15, Grange Park. This was an absolute faff to change platforms but the connection was made onto double winners 313063 and 313032 to shack 16, Bowes Park. My luck seemed to be neverending tonight! 9 winners in a row! This luck continued as double winners 313046 and 313053 took me up to Winchmore Hill in order to avoid me festering at Bowes Park for 20 minutes. The next service was in the hands of winner 313060 and dud 313037 which I took to shack 17, Hornsey. From here, the Great Northern started being more difficult with me as the winners all seemed to be off up the East Coast Mainline. Something I couldn’t do with enough time to spare as the first service back wasn’t into Finsbury Park until about 1840.

I took winner 313054 and dud 313042 for the short run to Alexandra Palace and awaited a service back south to Drayton Park, shack 18. However, the units were starting to return from places like Gordon Hill so double duds 313018 and 313050 produced for the journey to Finsbury Park, where I waited to see what turned up on the next service. Winner 313040 was leading dud 313027 on the next one, so I took that to Drayton Park before taking fresh duds 313037 and 313060 back to Finsbury Park as it was now 1819 and my train left in 41 minutes from Kings Cross! I fancied one more winner so I joined a winning 365529 to London King’s Cross where I picked up a sandwich and a bottle of water in case in the first class service was having issues as I didn’t want to starve at any point

Dud 91102 was hauling the 1900 to Edinburgh this evening, and I took a seat in Coach K for the journey north. Tea was served as we passed Finsbury Park and orders taken for dinner shortly after. I tried the Chicken Supreme, which was delicious and not a bad portion size either! The cheese was had for dessert, bit tiddly but the brie was quite nice, though 3 crackers was a little tight! After Peterborough there was another drinks run, but nothing beyond there until departure from York. There was a snacks run where I tried the New York Deli sandwiches and had another bag of crisps as well as a cup of tea. They were quite nice too! After here, service was suspended until after Newcastle which was fine by me as I was only there for the hot meal.

Newcastle was reached bang on time at 2149. An excellent day!

Total winners: 42
Total shacks: 18 (Elstree and Borehamwood, Mill Hill Broadway, Cricklewood, Hendon, Brockley, Honor Oak Park, Forest Hill, Penge West, Anerley, Gipsy Hill, Birkbeck, Eden Park, Alexandra Palace, Bowes Park, Palmers Green, Grange Park, Hornsey, Drayton Park)
Total cost: £83.50
Total Mileage- 633mi 56ch

As far as I know, 442s are staying on their London Bridge to/from Brighton and Eastbourne peak hour diagrams, as well as the summer special non-stop Eastbourne to Victoria and return in the summer.

Also, the can of worms with Southern only tickets on the GEx is still going on, most people aren't confident about challenging the gateline staff. Good call with the 458/0s, into single figures now, and only 3 diagrams normally, 458014 and 458006 were used on the Juniper Railtour in May, that was good, glad you could get a 458/0 pair in. Excellent read.

Again, cheers :)

Yeah the GatEx gateline woman struck me as being very rude indeed, taking no prisoners with tickets!

An excellent day indeed.
Happily it was a very pleasant older chap on the gate the last time I did the Gatwick Express.
Helping people who looked a bit confused and giving a cheerful hello to the rest of us.
It'll never catch on!

Hope tomorrow is good for you!

An amazingly good time had in London, a lot of shacks done and a megaton of winners too! Getting 458/0s in will have been a massive bonus, nicely done. I'd have only scored 313035 out of your massive 313 bashing spree (055 and 061 are my other requirements) from the looks of it, did you partake of motor coach moves for the noise?

Excellent read too, as always :)

313061 appeared at Drayton Park! I'm currently kicking myself for not taking it to Highbury for the Vic as it had a required 039 attached too

Genuinely can't remember about the motor coaches, I was standing most of the time in the rear coach of the train, made it easier recording the unit numbers :p

Day 3 of your East Midlands Rover sounds epic - you certainly got around there!

I keep seeing the GatEx 442s parked up at Vic on my lunchtime wombles - maybe one to experience, assuming I can get somewhere on it and back in an hour or so...

Thanks to me being on a North East Rover i've not been able to finish the EMR, but I have been doing the NER whilst on the move, so hopefully there'll be at least one day of that by tonight :)

Looking forward to the read, as always. It'll be a nice break from using my phone's browser to add 2 months of journeys to RailMiles, thanks to the PC misbehaving...

12/09- SPT Daytripper

Due to A Levels and suchlike, I’ve fallen behind a little with these, although I do have two and a half days of my incredibly eventful North East Rover (I lost my ticket and railcard on the 3rd to last train on the final day, on board the 1716 Leeds-Goole.) In summary, my plan was to bail at Pontefract, jump on the Knottingley train behind and take it up and back to Wakefield Kirkgate where I’d join something else. Instead, I bailed at Pontefract, joined the Knottingley, realised, and had a huge panic. When I asked Northern’s Twitter for help, ie give the Goole guard a buzz, I was met with sarcasm and told to fester at Knottingley for 95 minutes for it to come back. Thankfully, after a 30 something minute wait, the guard of the 1839 Leeds noticed me stood on the wrong platform and offered me a ride back to Leeds while he sorted things out. Alas, the ticket wasn’t found but I was given permission to travel back to Newcastle for free. I don’t think the XC guard was best pleased but I wasn’t in the mood for paying £50 plus lost railcard!

Back to the present, I booked this trip last minute as I realised that there were still reasonable advances left up to Edinburgh, only £7.80 on the 0630 to Edinburgh and £10.25 on the 1830 back. Furthermore, I had a RTV for £10.23 from CrossCountry which brought the price down by quite a bit! It was then £11.50 for an SPT Daytripper and £8.30 for a return to Glasgow, so overall this wasn’t shaping up to be too bad value a trip! It was out at 0600 for a short lift into Newcastle for dud 91116 to take me to Edinburgh. This was the first service of the morning, calling at Morpeth, Alnmouth, Berwick and Dunbar en route. Not that I remember most of it, as I spent most of the journey sleeping until Dunbar! I also had my hopes on us arriving early (0813 was the booked WTT arrival) for me to catch the 0815 to Glasgow Queen Street, and that looked to be the case as we headed through the final tunnel at 0808 with RTT setting 0810 as our arrival time, but we then sat in the tunnel. For 12 minutes. In that time, there were two ‘can the guard contact the driver’ announcements and two angry announcements over the PA from the guard stating ‘HELLO DRIVER? HELLO!?!’

At 0823 we arrived into Platform 11 on top of what seemed like a failed portion of the Caledonian Sleeper and I headed to Platform 12 only to realise that the 0830 to Glasgow wasn’t there. It eventually arrived in at 0833 where to my pleasant surprise, it was declared a non-stop express from Haymarket and we made up all the time en route. This was the first winner of the day in the form of 170426, and I then made a hasty dash to Central to buy my Daytripper and join winner 380110 for the fast run to Ayr, which was winning track beyond Kilwinning. I do enjoy bashing the 380s, with them having plug sockets and wifi, as well as a pretty smooth ride. The journey soon flew over as I hopped off at Ayr to grab a few photos before joining 380110 back as far as Troon, where I bailed to join double winners 380010 and 380018 back to Newton-on-Ayr, where another winner in the form of 380019 took me to Prestwick Town. It was then onto dud 380106 back over to a rather wet Newton-on-Ayr where fresh duds 380010 and 380018 took me through back to Kilwinning where I opted against scratching Howwood due to us being 4 late, and it was a +6 in the pouring rain.

Instead, I bailed and joined winner 380102 back to Irvine, where dud 380106 was taken back to Glasgow Central for my next line of attack: The 314s. Winner 314212 was waiting to work the 1245 to Newton, so I took it to Langside as the rain continued fall quite heavily. The plus of bashing the Cathcart Circle is that the island platforms make tight connections very easy, so I had +2s etc for most of the time. Another winner in the form of 314210 was then working a service back over, which I took to Pollokshields West, another basic little station with nobody around, although the shelter provided welcome cover before another winner 314204 took me around the circle to Queen’s Park (Strathclyde). I was on a roll as winner 314205 appeared for the run to Mount Florida where the winning streak was topped off with a winner 314214 back to Glasgow Central. 74 minutes after leaving Central, I’d scooped 5 winners and 4 shacks, not bad at all! I then descended into the low level platforms for an insect leap to Argyle Street on double winners 318261 and 318267 before crossing over onto the late running Dalmuir, formed of dud 320305 which was taken to Drumchapel, a quiet station it seemed, and the fester was also well reduced thanks to the +14 being reduced to a +3. Double winners 320308 and 320322 produced for the leap to a drizzly Westerton where the next service was a Milngavie, so I took double duds 320307 and 320318 for the short run to Hillfoot, another completely deserted shack, and winner 334004 for the run back to Westerton.

The line of attack was now finishing up the shacks via Singer, so dud 318268 took me to a busy looking Singer where I hopped back on a winning 320304 to Drumry. I noted a fox strolling around on the line here, being completely disinterested in the train passing it! A Ryanair flight also passed quite low overhead, so I’m assuming that Glasgow Airport was very close indeed! Dud 320302 appeared to take me to Dalmuir where I joined double winners 334018 and 334025 for the journey to Hyndland. Refurbished dud 318254 and winner 318258 provided the haulage to Exhibition Centre where a hasty crossover was made for dud 318255 to Jordanhill. I could have continued up to another shack, but my mind was turning to heading home as we approached 4pm, with my last possible train being the 1715 off Queen Street. Winner 318269 took me to Glasgow Central where I had time for one more move, something completely different. It was up onto the high level station for a dud 156512 to Crossmyloof. Pollokshaws West was also possible, but hey, all the shacks to Barrhead are required. A dud 156502 appeared for the run back to Central where I realised that the 1700 to Birmingham was an attractive option.

It was also cancelled, so I decided to have a go at catching the 1700 from Queen Street. Bear in mind that I ran out of Central at 1653, so this wasn’t really the easiest connection. However, I ran there in 4 minutes, to be greeted by a winning 170401. It was a pleasant run to Waverley where dinner was sourced and I joined dud 91102 back to Newcastle, via the ECML. A stunning run this evening as the sun set, and we powered south to be 5 early on arrival. An excellent day really!

Total cost: £29.52
Total Mileage: 493mi 68ch
Total winners: 22, plus 17 shacks.

A good day was had by the sounds of things! Looking forward to hearing the rest of your rover day/days. Sorry to hear about the railcard etc. Did you get it back or source a replacement?

Nah, but the first replacement is only a tenner so I wasn't too annoyed.

Here's day 1 of the North East Rover

It's not properly formatted as I'm on my phone but here it is for now

It was a bright and early start as I picked up my things for a drive into town in order to catch the 0559 service to London as far as Doncaster. I was dropped off for around 0545, and I so I took the time to check what was hauling me today. It was double duds 43290 and 43296. Still, it was a quiet service as I headed down to Coach B and took an unreserved seat for the journey south. It was a quiet uninterrupted run, despite the disruption south of Donny and we arrived in on time at 0721. It was then a 20 minute wait for the 0743 to Cleethorpes, in which time I noted 458012's leading coach sitting by the 460 carcasses, and 2 carriages of Class 321 getting dragged around by a Class 08. My service, which was happily formed of a winning 170306, was soon arriving on Platform 3B. The service was a very quiet affair indeed with no more than 5 people including myself in the leading carriage.

To play it safe with connecting onto the Barton on Humber train, I could've left at Grimsby Town but I continued through to Cleethorpes just to avoid festering there for a while. We proceeded down the single track line and arrived into Cleethorpes at 0855. It was then straight over to a dud 153360 working the 0900 to Barton on Humber. It was this point that I realised that New Clee was a request stop, so in order to keep things interesting I made a note to do the New Clee-Grimsby Docks walk in reverse just for the experience of flagging down a train [emoji38]

The journey to Barton was quite pleasant once we headed up the branch from Habrough, and I couldn't help but notice how spartan Thornton Abbey was! Very low platforms indeed. Some pretty nice views of the Humber were had before we arrived into Barton and headed back down the way we came towards Grimsby Docks.

It was now a case of walking to New Clee which took me around 10 minutes, giving me 6 or 7 to spare before the arrival of 153360 for its third run of the day. I flagged it down successfully but didn't expect the guard to be working from the front, so I spent a few seconds at the back door looking rather puzzled before a rather sarcastic 'press the button' was yelled down the platform. There wasn't any need for the attitude but hey ho, and off we went to Habrough. This was another very quiet station where I had a few minutes to wait until the Brigg Line train turned up. I was rather irritated to see a mega dud 142027 appear, but a winning 153359 was on the back so I was pretty chuffed with that! It was a pretty leisurely paced run as we called at the rather sad looking Brigg, which looks like the footbridge needs some work, and Kirton Lindsey which actually looked like a nice little station. We were then 11 early into Gainsborough Central so I went for a walk around the station and grabbed a few photos. Because I did actually walk around a bit I'm considering it a scratched station, my way of doing it is that provided you walk around the station a bit and don't just step on and off again, then rejoining the same service is fine. We left on time from Gainsborough, and then proceeded to Retford where I left to head north.

I was banking on a very dodgy connection, I had to catch the 1254 to Edinburgh as far as Doncaster and subsequently the 1312 from Doncaster to Leeds. This was a +3 but the 1312 would be chasing my service. However, the 1254 was running 3 late and my connection was on time. I didn't want it being let ahead! Thankfully, dud 91131 turned up and was given the road first despite being 6 late. The result? My connection pulled in and had to wait on the fasts next to us. A very weird sight.
On arrival at Doncaster the platform was full of folk headed for the races. I was glad to not be continuing on this service! Dud 91101 pulled in alongside us on the 1314 to Leeds, which I took through to there, arriving in 6 late. This meant that I had to run for a winning 158842 for the journey to my last shack on the Leeds to Huddersfield line, which was Deighton. However, we had lost 3 minutes by Mirfield so to stay on track I left there and opted to do Deighton later in the week as it was a +4 connection. It was a hasty last minute decision as I jumped up...and left my rover and railcard on the table. I didn't realise until I was walking down the steps at the station by which point it was far too late. Quick action was required. This service formed the 1459 back from Huddersfield so I sent some very desperate messages to Northern's twitter team who successfully located the guard and the guard taking the train back. I was now well off plan but I wasn't particularly bothered, I just wanted my ticket back! A freshly dud 158842 pulled in at 1507 where my rover and railcard were handed back to me, and I proceeded to kick myself for my stupidity [emoji38] In all seriousness though, the actions of Northern were amazing and saved my bacon! And with that, it was back to Leeds where I drew up what turned into a far better plan.

I joined a dud 185132 working the 1538 to Hull as far as Brough where I planned a few shack attacks. Namely Howden, Ferriby and Hessle. It was a pretty peaceful journey through Selby and through quite a sedate looking landscape before arrival at Brough where I crossed over onto a winning 158817 for the journey to Howden. There didn't look to be an awful lot around the station, and I spent my ten minute wait watching in amusement as the level crossing barriers closed 5 minutes before the train came into sight. Very bizarre. A dud 158792 produced for the journey to Hessle where the Humber Bridge was certainly very prevalent in the skyline! There was also a rather funny smell in the air as double duds 158850 and 142020 produced for the short leap to Ferriby where a winning 158908 was taken back to Hessle. Another winner then produced in the form of 158790 to take me to Brough, where I changed for a Northern service to Doncaster via Selby rather than Goole. This came in the form of a winning 153307 with dud 158904 on the back. I sat in the 153 for maximum entertainment as we called only at Selby en route. The sky also started to go very dark, and the heavens appeared to open as we joined the ECML and the little dogbox thrashed its way to Donny where we arrived in at 1849.

Next aim was to get in a few shacks between Doncaster and Sheffield so I bailed and rejoined fresh dud 158790 on the slower stopping service via Rotherham. This was taken to Mexborough where the weather started to turn very nasty indeed. There were some pretty powerful flashes of fork lightening and cracks of thunder as the highlight of my day, the illusive winning 142005 rolled in for the journey to Conisbrough. Finally! I'd captured the pesky sod. The rain was now falling very heavily but I persevered and legged it into the shelter. I knew that dud 142089 was going to produce for the journey to Swinton but I wasn't too fussed. It was warm and it moved. After Swinton, it was time to head home as a winning 144007 appeared on the 1948 to Scunthorpe. It contained a lot of folk wanting Newcastle too as the line via Church Fenton was flooded, and with the Scunthorpe having a +8 onto the Newcastle service it seemed ideal. Furthermore, the XC to Newcastle at 2019 was cancelled so catching this 2010 service was paramount. In the end we did, just as the rain fell in torrents once more as 43313 and 43274 appeared with the EMT rake. It was a quiet, but very thundery and delayed journey home, arriving into Newcastle 21 late at 2201.

Total mileage: 587mi 65ch
Total cost: £13.49
Total winners: 9
New shacks: 11

Certainly that must have been a nerve-racking time at Deighton, thank Goodness the railcard and ticket were handed in! I've certainly been prompted now to make sure my ticket wallet hasn't come out of my wallet now, thankfully it hasn't!

Bashing in stormy weather isn't much fun is it? Certainly you were lucky at Retford that the signaller held your second move on the Down Fast, I'd have expected it to be pathed ahead.

Another quality read, quite the variety you had there too!

Day 2

Day 2 started on a sunnier note as I made my way to Newcastle for the 0755 to London, formed of duds 43274 and 43313 from last night. I located my seat in Coach B and it was a quiet, pleasant run down to York where I changed for the TPE behind. Between trains I wandered into WHSmith and got curious. 75p for seaweed? Interesting. I got some change out and bought the curious packet of seaweed, and in return I was handed 6 McDonald's vouchers! [emoji38] The seaweed tasted absolutely dire but I now had some cheap food sorted for the rest of the week. And with that, 185140 was arriving with the 0911 to Liverpool, which was taken to Leeds. This was a pretty painless run, and on arrival at Leeds I took advantage of one of the vouchers, getting a free mocha with a Bacon McMuffin :) It was then over to double winners 43048 and 43083 working the 0950 to St Pancras International, and a seat was taken in Coach A for the run to Sheffield. This was by far the most civilised trip I've made between the two cities, with only two others in the carriage. However, this service was also running via Nottingham so it took forever to get to London.

It was now time for a couple of Meadowhall leaps, so dud 158784 was taken out on the 1039 to Leeds via Castleford, followed by winner 158796 back to Sheffield. I then jumped on dud 150223 back out to Meadowhall, followed by winner 144023 back to Sheffield. One of the doors on this train wouldn't close but I ended up being in the right place to push them shut myself, so we didn't suffer any delay. However, the unit did look to have been taken out of service once we arrived, probably to avoid any further issue. I then opted for the York service, being worked by winner 222006, which actually had a pretty healthy load! It was a sprightly run up the ECML, and we were into York for 1228 as I crossed over for the 1232 to London which had winner 91106 pushing on the back. This was a far less pleasant run, with me standing in the Coach E/F vestibules for the duration of the journey back down to Doncaster where I ran for a dud 158853 working the 1258 to Scarborough. I took this through to Cottingham for a shack attack and a bit of a mileage move, and up until Hull it was a very peaceful run with very few passengers on board. Yesterday's dud 158792 was working the service back to Hull where I bailed for winner ]180111 to take me back to Doncaster via Selby. This was far more pleasant than the 158 and there were a few more miles in it too, although I couldn't help but be amused at the guard laughing her way through the 'welcome on board the 1431 to London...' announcement. We were also constantly warned of the service being full and standing when there were no such issues and plenty of seats in Coach E, unless Retford and Grantham were going to cause issues.

I joined 158792 again to Sheffield as it pulled in alongside us. It was a relatively quiet run to there calling only at Meadowhall where I then opted to jump onto dud 185131 back to the aforementioned Meadowhall. I now had sufficient time for a quick run to Barnsley and back just as the heavens opened and it started to pour! A winning 158902 was taken there and dud 158793 back, the return journey taking around 35 minutes. Back at Meadowhall, I decided to head up to Huddersfield for a more sedate kind of run, and dud 142013 provided the rather leaky traction for the journey. That said though, for a Pacer, it was a pretty decent run through to Huddersfield and it was actually *relatively* comfortable [emoji38] I changed at Huddersfield onto a very busy Hull service formed of winner 185141 which was taken to Leeds where I took some time out for a McDonald's using another one of the vouchers. My plan had then been to catch the 1912 to Malton but it was running 9 late and it was only a +10 there and the weather was turning worse so I made a series of what I can only describe as my most genius moves of the day.

I joined the 1916 to London, which had dud 91103 pushing, as far as Wakefield Westgate where I then dived onto double winners 43207 and 43304 working the very late 1847 to Edinburgh which I took to York where another late running HST was due in the form of the 2014 to Sunderland which had double winners 43423 and 43480 in charge. I took these to Northallerton, plonking myself in Coach A for the journey north. Dud 91116 was then taken to Darlington, followed by duds 43311/43318 to Newcastle.

Another successful day!

Being on a 142 when it has working heaters in the pouring rain, and you have a bay of 3 to slouch across, is actually alright
