After over 20 years, Mike Jacques will retire from driving on the RHDR in October 2012. To mark this occasion, Mike (albeit hopefully kept secret from him until the day) will drive a very special train on the Saturday before his retirement, a train with roots back to Grantham and the East Coast Mainline, a great passion of Mike's.
Believed to be another Romney first, Mikes Elizabethan will depart Romney Sands at 09:10 for a third-scale 393-mile trip stopping only to turn and service at Hythe. This includes no less than four consecutive 28-mile non-stop runs departing from Hythe at 10:20, 12:40, 14:45 and 16:50 with a further 19:00 departure terminating at New Romney.
Subject to availability, Mike will attempt this marathon with Typhoon, his regular engine.
A well-loaded train (including Bar-Car) will certainly add to the occasion. Holders of a RomneyRover ticket on the day are welcome to join the train and share the spectacle. Pre-booking is not required.
But please remember, we hope to keep the arrangements SECRET from Mike until the day itself. (Mike doesn't frequent the Internet that often!)
