We were promised strike day timetables for 20 July to be uploaded on 13 July. I have to travel either to Barnsley or to Wakefield Westgate from London on that day, and I'm still getting what appear to be normal train times when I look online. I'm aware of the proposed early finish to services.

Does anyone know when we might have confirmed train times?

Have another look at RTT they’ve updated now
Thanks. I might have been misreading the NRE journey planner as there are a few later connections available with open access operators

Yes, they seem to exist only in the morning

No Trains run on the Northern service via Barnsley on Strike days. Best way to get to Barnsley from Sheffield on Strike days is the Stagecoach Gold X17 from Sheffield Interchange B platform to Barnsley, takes just under an hour. If going from Barnsley to Wakefield then the hourly Stagecoach 59 or Globe Holidays 96 are your options.

They served Barnsley on previous RMT strike days even if not all routes.

And there will be a reason why they aren’t on this occasion not just because they can’t be bothered.

Often it’s only a small number of contingent crew who sign individual routes and it could be something like a very simple case of not enough contingent crew who sign Barnsley because they are on their summer holidays.

Greater Anglia appear to be running an almost-normal timetable, albeit starting a little later and finishing a little earlier (everything to destination by 2300).

Great Northern on the other hand seem to still think that the signallers are on strike, with pretty much the same timetable they ran during the strikes last summer and everything finished by the ludicrously early hour of 1830.

We can all learn from Greater Anglia.

TOCs don’t not run trains because they “can’t be bothered”
Well, yes and no. Most TOCs have generally bid the same timetable as they've run since the first RMT strike - despite the signallers no longer being on strike. It's difficult to imagine that despite months of strikes, i.e. opportunities to train contingency staff, the constraint on the timetable TOCs can run is really still the availability of such staff.

It's probably just that doing this is the 'default option' and deemed the easiest way of handling strikes; there seems to be an air of resignation. The better TOCs, such as Greater Anglia, are running as intensive a service as possible and are to be applauded for this.

Have tweeted GA to praise them on their resilience.

SWR are doing something really odd on the Windsor side - down services routing via one side of the Hounslow Loop, and Up services returning via the other. Most confusing!

Well done GA! Last year travel from Clacton was impossible during strikes, so I'm glad to see they've got their act together. Interestingly no service at Alresford and Great Bentley or to Walton. The Frinton Nationalists will not be pleased.
(And no, I haven't forgotten about St Botolph's and Weeley - it's just they're not served on Sundays so I wouldn't expect them to be served on strike days.)

LNER website has the strike timetables showing and has done for a few days, their journey planner also correctly what will run to Wakefield.

i think shunters/supervisors at most of the GN depots n sidings are RMT and theres only enough contingency to open so me of the sites on 12 hour shifts 7am-7pm

And what makes you think that is the cause for the early finish? Guess work?

It’s actually depot staff within the RMT that’s causing the reduced service on GN - there’s only enough contingency staff to man the depots and sidings for a single shift (in the same way there’s only enough contingency signallers for a single shift). Like the trains can’t magically move without signallers they also can’t magically move off the depots and sidings with no shunters.

RMT represent staff in all sorts of grades.

It might explain a reduced service, but it doesn't justify running only between 07:30 and 18:30. Not all GN/TL units start or end their day at RMT-staffed depots - some use depots that are Siemens-staffed, others outstable. A reduced service could therefore still be provided if there were the will.

MTR proved that exactly this is possible - they ran a reduced service on the core section of the Elizabeth line outside the hours of 07:30-18:30 on NR signaller strike days. They're reliant on stabling accessed via Network Rail infrastructure to run a full service, but still ran a reduced service using units that they could accommodate within their own infrastructure.

With the signaller strikes over, there really is little excuse for the continuing poor service that many TOCs are providing on strike days.

There are several services running past 18:30. The last Cambridge departure from Kings Cross is 20:02, Bedford from St Pancras is 20:49, Brighton from Victoria is 20:50, Three Bridges from London Bridge 21:05 and East Grinstead from Victoria 20:44. It's unclear what the constraints might be on extending these further, but some effort has gone into extending services post the signaller strikes.

Not all the Thameslink units even end their day at a depot, let alone a RMT-staffed one, given they run through the night normally.

Still, I guess we should see it as a massive positive for the RMT that even on a DOO railway, it can still cause significant disruption.

Actually it was sarcasm, but until/unless they actually bother to explain to the public why their service is so much worse than what Greater Anglia is managing to put on, I reserve the right to be as sarcastic as I choose.

Indeed there are - I missed those. However, the last Cambridge-Ely remains at around 1730, just as it was when the signaller strike was on. (I'm aware there are a handful of GA services later than that, but as the only thing running after 1730 I fear they may be very overcrowded).

And once again the Kings Lynn branch gets no service *whatever*, which isn't great for those who've forked out about £7000 for an annual season ticket.

I see EMR are running a two hourly service to Skegness during this set of strikes, as opposed to previous strikes having no service at all. Is there any indication as to whether these will be strengthened at all, surely they can’t run a 3 car 170 and hope for the best as it will be absolute carnage.

yep. DOO is the way to go.
Not with Thameslink who are throwing in the towel on services via Redhill at 1830 despite they are now driver despatch. Also despite drivers are on o/t ban that day as well somehow they can run the 4tph service that they can't do on the other days this week:rolleyes:

Are they not affected by station staff? Do the stations need to be staffed etc for TL to call at stations?

Only Redhill is staffed but Thameslink self despatch. Anyhow so whilst Redhill is main station on route Merstham and Earlswood are close enough to Redhill to act as an alternative so they could have maintained a service via the route but GTR really can't be bothered to try very hard on strike/work to rule days compared to many other TOCs. Thameslink website information is very poor as well this week i only found out the info as my local ticket office staff have put out a whiteboard at the station warning passengers last service from London is at 1746. The poster just tells you to refer to National Rail which unless you put a specific journey into the planner you wont realise the early closure.

Why does this 'can't be bothered' trope have to be used all the time? Is there evidence they can't be bothered, or is there actually another reason?
