Not too often but VTEC sets will reverse at Newcastle to get them back in the correct formation and I am assuming there will be some scheduled to reverse so that crew can keep their route knowledge up to date.
No, but there can be numerous reasons. In this case, the train was in the correct formation out of King's Cross, but it's possible something may have happened such as a bird strike, or windscreen failure, to require the other end to be at the front from Newcastle.
Or possibly a planned diversion tomorrow, which would otherwise put the train into reverse formation.
If a train does need to be turned, then Newcastle is generally the easiest place to do it.

They don't need to reverse the formation for the Tyne Valley diversions, as the train stays the "correct" way round for the whole journey.
I'm guessing a technical issue.
I know they don't need to, but it does seem to happen more often on a Friday or Saturday evening than any other time. Too often, I think, to be a technical issue. Perhaps it's route learning?

Could be for route retention purposes. Also because of the Carlisle diversions, platform occupation has been altered as has dwell times. Services "may" well come in via king eddie bridge (KEB) and back out high level bridge (HLB) to pick up the tyne valley without encroaching on movements across KEB that Northern or TPE might be using. That will put them into reverse formation edinburgh bound but will then be corrected on the return by coming off the tyne valley behind the former gateshead sheds, cross the HLB then back out via KEB straight onto ECML south.

Apologies for the delayed update: I spoke to the driver once we reached Waverley and he said that the reversal was due to a problem which had emerged during the journey with the driver's cab door. (Sorry, I didn't take in which end was which. It was late!)
He also said that with the cool, damp evening he could feel the loco slipping, and apologised if it had resulted in a slightly rough ride! (It hadn't been rough at all: I spent most of the journey watching video on my tablet, which is far from being the most stable thing when it's propped up on on its folding cover, and I don't recall the slightest wobble.)

It was an issue with driver's door on the Class 91.
