I guess I’m just seeking reassurance that I’m not doing anything wrong…

I’m travelling in Hamburg presently, and have purchased day tickets on the HVV website.

These are delivered in the form of a barcode; but at no point of my travels have I been asked for it; needed to pass through any kind of barrier. Nor has there been any kind of notice or similar that I need to exchange that barcode for a “proper” ticket.

The confirmation email, with barcode is accessible on my phone which is kept charged. Is that it?

German urban systems use the "honour system" as the Americans call it, i.e. there are no gatelines, just random checks which aren't frequent but are vicious and done with plain clothes staff (though when I lived there I got quite good at identifying them, partly through recognising the faces and partly because they'd board and stand blocking the doors*).

I've just had a read and found this:

It appears to me that your choices are to either print the ticket out, or download the HVV app and show them on your phone using that from your account (it sounds like you can just call them up if you've already bought them and logged into the app with your account you used to buy them) - "abrufen" basically means "call up". It doesn't appear that showing a PDF or confirmation email is acceptable - or at least it doesn't say it is though it may be. I'd seek to download that app and get them onto there.

If you didn't sign up for an account, to be sure you might want to ask your hotel/hostel reception if they can print them out for you, or if they know if the inspectors generally do accept a PDF in an email.

A bit more info, I found the actual T&C here:

The relevant part is:

  • direkt nach abgeschlossenem Bestellvorgang, über den Button „Als PDF herunterladen" oder „Als mobile Fahrkarte speichern“;
  • über Links in der umgehend per E-Mail zugesandten Bestellbestätigung, mit denen die Fahrkarte als PDF oder PNG aufrufbar ist;

Or Google translated:

6.1.1 Provision of tickets

(1) Tickets purchased via hvv.de are made available in two file formats:

in PDF file format for printing or
in PNG file format for saving on mobile devices.

(2) Provision is made

directly after completing the ordering process, using the “Download as PDF” or “Save as mobile ticket” button;
via links in the order confirmation sent immediately by email, with which the ticket can be accessed as a PDF or PNG;
in meinhvv under the item “Contracts/Sales: Online shop order history” (until the validity expires).

If desired, the ticket can also be sent in PDF format to the email address specified when ordering. This request can be indicated on the “Check Order” page. All access options provided via link can only be accessed until the ticket's validity expires.

(3) In principle, tickets purchased via shop.hvv.de are also stored in the hvv app. Printing out or saving on mobile devices in accordance with points 6.1.2 or 6.1.3 is not necessary for this use. This service is only available to meinhvv registered customers. For this purpose, after successful registration, a complete list of the user's purchased tickets is downloaded from the background server. With this method of use, the provisions of point 6.2 of these General Terms and Conditions apply.
6.1.2 Use of self-printing tickets (PDF)

(1) Tickets provided in PDF file format must be printed out in their original size (black and white or color) before the journey. The tickets must be printed out in such a way that all information is complete and perfectly legible and verifiable. It is the customer's responsibility to ensure sufficient hardware and software to download and print the ticket. The printed ticket must be carried with you at all times during the journey or in the company facilities and must be shown to the transport company's staff upon request. An order or order confirmation of a ticket that you can print out yourself and showing the PDF file on electronic devices do not count as authorization to travel.

(2) Tickets that can be printed out yourself are not transferable and are only valid in conjunction with a photo ID for the person named on the ticket. For group tickets, the person named on the ticket must always travel with you. Subsequent submission in the event of a complaint will not be accepted.
6.1.3 Using tickets to display on your smartphone (PNG)

(1) Tickets provided in the PNG file format must be saved by the customer on an operational mobile device and must be carried with them at all times during the journey or in the operating facilities for control purposes and, upon request, presented to the transport company's staff in a way that is suitable for checking. The customer is responsible for operating the device. However, the testing personnel may request that the terminal device be handed over and operated at short notice for testing purposes. Entering the means of transport or the area where tickets are required is only permitted after the tickets have been completely downloaded onto the customer's device. If the customer cannot provide proof of a valid travel authorization when checking the ticket (e.g. due to technical malfunctions, empty battery, etc.) or the ticket was only booked after the start of the journey or after entering the area requiring a ticket on express trains (U-, S-Bahn, A-Bahn), this will be punished as a journey without a valid ticket. An order, order confirmation or screenshots of tickets for display on the smartphone do not constitute travel authorization.

(2) Tickets that can be viewed on a smartphone are not transferable and are only valid in conjunction with a photo ID for the person named on the ticket. For group tickets, the person named on the ticket must always travel with you. Subsequent submission in the event of a complaint will not be accepted.

(3) A printed version of such files will not be recognized as travel authorization.
6.2. Provision and use in the hvv app

(1) Tickets purchased via the hvv app, as well as valid tickets purchased via shop.hvv.de, are made available in the hvv app under “Tickets”. It is not possible to print out a ticket purchased via the hvv app.

(2) The detailed view of each ticket is only reloaded via the background system if it has not yet been marked as invalid. After logging in, the locally stored ticket data is synchronized with the ticket data stored in the background system every time the application is started. In the event of unavailability, incorrect or incomplete transfer of the ticket

My reading of this is that if the ticket is a PDF you must print it, but they also send it in PNG format for download onto your phone, and that it must be downloaded before use (which makes sense, as a fair chunk of the network is underground). Does yours include a PNG format ticket? If so download it into your photos and you're fine by my reading of that (German version, not just the translation). If not you will need to either get the PDF printed out or install the app and download it onto there by logging into your account.

While you won't get prosecuted for getting it wrong, the Penalty Fare is about EUR100 so you don't want to get caught with it wrong, so well worth checking!

Presumably the bar code in an email is the PNG - so as long as you can access your email underground that's all you need. Saving it your phone just in case is a good idea

We have the PNGs saved to our phones so sounds like we’re good.

Thanks for the reassurance

Depending where in Hamburg you are, you could also drop into one of the service centres at the larger rail stations and check (there are also some at smaller stations, usually in the shops): https://www.hvv.de/en/service/service-centres-sales-points.
Or just speak to a random member of the public that looks like they might know what an eticket is and ask them - it's quite normal to have random conversations on German public transport, in my experience!

I agree their website isn't entirely clear, in German or English, what you're required to do with etickets without reading the detailed Ts and Cs.
