Return Ticket - can I use a different, cheaper station on the return?

Regarding a child return ticket with tube to central London (not a travelcard).

Can you return to a different station on another line? It's a cheaper ticket but means more time on the tube and a different rail operator.

How much does the ticket cost, and which stations does it show it is "from" and "to" at each end (for example, Chelmsford to London Terminals or Underground Zone 1)?

The fact that the fare for the intended journey is cheaper doesn't automatically mean you can simply travel on a different route. But it all depends on the details, hence the question above.

Sorry. Sydenham Hill (South Eastern) to Victoria (+tube zone 1) then back to Victoria to go to Forest Hill via Southern (or to go to London Bridge then Forest Hill).

OP mentioned a child ticket, which isn’t available on contactless.

I think a Zone 1-4 Anytime Day Travelcard (£8.30) or a Zone 1-6 Off Peak Day Travelcard (£8.30) would be cheaper than two singles and only 20p more than a return? So that's probably the easiest option.
