Return Portion of Leatherhead - Shotton Off Peak Return Validity

I have the return portion of a Leatherhead to Shotton Off Peak return. Valid till the 1st of June. I want to use it this Sunday to return from Shotton to Leatherhead. The restriction code is VN - Valid via any permitted route. Am I allowed to use West Midlands trains Crewe to London Euston or London North Western Crewe to London Euston with this ticket. Actually prefer the slower route when not in a hurry.

As long as you're on the permitted route you can use any operator regardless of speed.

So permitted route Crewe to Euston on this ticket can be different routes although different routes is still Crewe to Euston? Usually Avanti with this ticket is Crewe and combination of Stafford Rugby or Milton Keynes. But West Midlands and London North Western sometimes go via Northampton (which I don't think Avanti call at). Confusing for the average occasional Rail Traveller and I consider myself an extremely well travelled savvy person and I'm confused!

Please note this Sunday, depending on when exactly you're planning on departing Shotton, it may well be a rail replacement bus for the initial journey leg to Chester.

From Crewe you can go direct to London Euston, or via the Birmingham loop, or via the Northanpton loop, or both loops. Lots of other routes (e.g. via Stoke on Trent, Oxford / Reading, or Gobowen / Shrewsbury / Telford, will also be permitted.

National routing guide map EO applies which shows either the direct route or via Northampton. It's really not user friendly!

Useful rule of thumb is that in almost every case if there's a direct train between 2 locations then an any permitted ticket between those locations will be valid. Of course this doesn't mean that it has to be a direct train. As long as you're using a route on the appropriate map then it's all good.
