I have read several threads on this topic but none answers my query specifically. I am booking a return sailrail from Reading to Douglas (IOM). The outward journey date is fixed and I will travel on trains and the ferry on that date. The return is open. But since the ferry needs to be reserved I have a fixed return date from Douglas to Heysham (FERRY leg). However, I want to break and travel on a different date in the RAIL leg of the return. Many posts say that in combined tickets such as this, its not allowed, essentially meaning open return is not 'open'. But my question is how will the system know which day I am taking the train? Do the ferry people punch the tickets with date/digitally stamp the ticket? Or when i am on the train, do the conductors ask me show a ferry reservation proof/date of journey proof? Or when I exit gatelines, are such tickets swallowed or marked as 'travelled and invalidated"? My stations and routes are same, just a different journey date within the 1 month.

These tickets indeed don't permit break of journey because their price massively undercuts walk-up rail-only fares.

However I'm not sure how that would be enforced, I'll leave that to others.

BRFares suggests the BoJ restriction only applies to the outward leg of IoM SailRail tickets, with the return being unrestricted.
