Whereas walking across the WCML on the level is rather less so. OK, you could potentially trip over the rail if you really weren't careful, but walking across, say, the Cambrian in the middle of nowhere, provided there's a good sightline, is no more dangerous than walking across the barrow crossing at Tywyn right in front of the train (which feels really odd, I must admit, but is allowed despite there being road access to both sides).

The UK takes the absolutist line of thou shalt never walk on the railway, but most other countries don't - the UK is well out of line with the "standard" on this one.

One exception - segregated tramways, where crossings are basically always on the level. And walking across the Cambs busway feels weird too!

My mate is a guard and retrieved an item from under a train whilst stopped in a station the other week. The guard wore high vis and made sure he took the drivers key with him so the unit couldn't be moved

The whole taking the key thing is merely ceremonial these days. I have many spare keys, so its no guarantee the train couldn't be moved.

What's so dangerous about this? The driver can quite clearly see if the line is clear or not and pedestrians will have plenty of time to get out of the way if the train does start moving!

I agree with you, I don't see any real danger here. But I can't see it happening in Britain!*

*Although upthread a station on the Cambrian coast was mentioned as having a crossing right in front of the train; is it similar?

Basically the same, yes, though between two side platforms so not everybody uses it. Shown as "barrow crossing" here. Always surprises me that it still exists as you can just walk/drive round via the road.

Penistone also has a barrow crossing which is in that case the only access to the far platform:

I'm sure there are others. I suspect Tywyn is a bit unusual in that because it's a passing point people do cross in front of the train (because it isn't going until the other one arrives). I forget if Penistone is a single line passing point or if the line is doubled, in which case you'd probably wait for it to go to cross?

That's questionable. If you walk in front of the train at a barrow crossing, trip and fall and knock yourself out, the driver will see you and not start the train moving (probably - though bear in mind the view from cabs can be limited). If you walk across the line elsewhere and trip and fall and knock yourself out, then if a train approaches it is probably going too fast to stop.

As far as the rules are concerned it is incumbent on the Train crew or station staff to request a Line Blockage if they wish to be protected.In the case of an item falling between the platform edge and train,then the train would provide the protection,but obviously someone would have to ensure the train did not move.
Signallers have procedures to block adjacent lines and rules specifically laid out for such things as items being retrieved from platform lines and Drivers wishing to inspect their trains. These occurrences have been added to the Line Blockage forms in recent years whereas previously it was an entry in the TRB.

They do, even towards Huddersfield where the train has already passed over the crossing.
There is also a barrow crossing at Silkstone Common to access the Car Park, but no announcements are made!
