Hey!
Just bought my friend a ticket from Redhill to Corrour, and noticed its covered under restriction 5F.

The Itinerary is as follows:

10:59
Redhill
Thameslink
Anytime Day Single
A Counted Place
12:13
Stevenage

Change at same station
12:41
Stevenage
Lumo
Super Off-Peak Single
Coach E, Seat 56
16:41
Edinburgh (Waverley)

Change at same station
17:15
Edinburgh (Waverley)
ScotRail
Super Off-Peak Single
Any unreserved seat
18:09
Glasgow Queen Street

Change at same station
18:23
Glasgow Queen Street
ScotRail
Super Off-Peak Single
No assigned seat
21:20
Corrour

However, trainline mention the following:

Restrictions

Not valid on trains timed to depart:

  • London Euston after 04:29 and before 09:05;(Restrictions do not apply on Fridays)
  • Watford Junction after 04:29 and before 09:00;(Restrictions do not apply on Fridays)
  • Milton Keynes Central after 04:29 and before 09:00.(Restrictions do not apply on Fridays)
Valid on all Caledonian Sleeper services (with supplement).
Does this mean he can catch a sleeper, despite not actually booking one specifically? It deems daft if he's allowed to travel that way if he hasn't specified that he's booked a seat. I've read a bit about supplements, but its not 100% clear, as they mention upgrading to a room. Does this mean he already has a valid seat on the sleeper service?

Any advice would be appreciated!

It'll be valid on the sleeper seated, but they will need to make a seat reservation. It's mandatory reservations for travel, and you'd be denied boarding without a reservation if it's full.

Alternatively, as stated, you can upgrade to a cabin with a room supplement you can buy from the sleeper website.

The tickets that have seemingly been booked don't appear to have inter-available validity on the Caledonian Sleeper and certainly wouldn't be valid from London Euston. Looks like it's one Anytime Day Single ticket from Redhill to Stevenage and then another (or more than one) Super Off Peak Single ticket from Stevenage to Corrour.

To use the Caledonian Sleeper from Glasgow Queen Street up to Corrour, as well as the mandatory seat reservation mentioned just now by @MrJeeves, the departure from Glasgow QS wouldn't be until 0548 on the next working day, which could be problematic if the Super Off Peak Single is a separate stand-alone ticket and has been issued/dated for the previous day.

Can you share a screenshot of the actual ticket or tickets as this would help to answer the question? If its an eticket, you can block over the 2D code and the number attached to it if you wish, along with any names etc.

The ticket appears to have restriction 9F, not 5F.

There is an Off Peak Single intended for use via Euston (but routed Any Permitted) costing a fair whack more which is 5F.

The OP's main question has been answered, but I was wondering whether someone travelling to Corrour might have a large rucksack which would risk falling foul of Lumo's luggage restrictions, which were the subject of this thread last year. I haven't re-read the whole thread, but my recollection is that the letter of the rules is quite restrictive of luggage size, that they aren't always enforced, but that they sometimes are.

A ticket with either restriction 5F or 9F would also be valid on LNER if there's a need to avoid Lumo; indeed 5F says 'For journeys from/via London Kings Cross and Stevenage, see restriction code 9F'. Restriction 9F is here, and it appears that the tickets woud be valid on LNER trains around the same time as the planned Lumo one, although if they don't stop at Stevenage that might require an extra change.

If it was me I'd probably want to have more than 14 minutes between scheduled arrival in Glasgow and the departure of the last train of the day up the West Highland line.

@MichaelR where did you buy the ticket? Was it Chiltern, which has form for selling multiple tickets that are not correctly described and don't all have the same validity.

A shame you wouldn't be allowed to change in London on that itinerary to board the Lumo at Kings Cross rather than at Stevenage (as no doubt you will board at Stevenage and find someone else sitting in your reserved seat etc) due to Lumo only calling at Stevenage to pick up only.

Also I agree with @181 it would probably be better trying to catch the 17:00 Glasgow train from Edinburgh [considering it looks to be a flexible ticket], gives a bit of extra time at the Glasgow end.

Stevenage is a much easier interchange - cross platform compared to a change of stations between St Pancras at Kings Cross. The minimum connection time at Stevenage of 4 minutes also opens up additional journey opportunities that might not be possible with a change in London.

WHile I understand what you're saying about seat reservations, the display above the seat will show it is booked from Stevenage to Edinburgh. Someone could equally be sitting in your seat if you boarded at Kings Cross.

Thanks so much! Especially the comment about Lumo as I now need to get in touch about luggage allowances haha! Got a large bag and a small-medium sized camping cooler lol

Is your Super Off Peak Single routed LUMO Only?

I would stick to changing at Stevenage as you are changing tickets there and the LUMO service is pick up only.

As you might be over their luggage allowance, it is a good thing you are boarding the LUMO service at Stevenage. I doubt you will have any issues boarding there with regards to luggage whereas you might at London Kings Cross.

I agree with others about trying to catch an earlier service to Glasgow if at all possible.

Lumo don't set their own Super Off-Peak fares - only Advances ("LumoFixed"), semi-flexible "LumoFlex" fares and Anytime fares.

But make sure it's one that arrives in Glasgow earlier, and not just one that leaves Edinburgh earlier -- there are multiple routes from Edinburgh to Glasgow, the others are likely to be slower, and some of them take you to a different station in Glasgow. The 17.00 as suggested above will be fine (if it's running -- it's not in the journey planner for tomorrow, presumably because of the drivers' pay dispute).

Hi Guys, spoke to Lumo who said ask the Guard who refuse boarding. Didn't wanna risk it so booked via Avanti instead.

The new issue I have is this:

I used trainsplit this time, and requested a seat. I'm going from Euston - Glasgow, however with split ticketing it looks like, I have to change seats 4 times! Is this really what I have to do, and will someone have booked the same seat as me for the portion where I'm not on it?

Who *may* refuse boarding (Accidentally missed that part)

Using the seat selector can fix that, but you could just go and look for a seat in one of the unreserved coaches, i.e. C and where present U, and often F and G don't have many.

Alternatively you could use the GWR website to make a single, through seat reservation - register for an account, login and then go to My Bookings -> Make a seat/bike reservation. Works for all operators (not just GWR).

@MichaelR. Have you now cancelled the original tickets? Tickets split Redhill->Stevenage and Stevenage->Corrour won't normally ever be valid on Avanti West Coast.

Too late for the OP now, but the tickets offered would have been valid as you suggest - and on LNER too!

Yes, but not many London Kings Cross to Edinburgh (LNER) trains call at Stevenage, where the original tickets were split, so the journey via the ECML would have necessitated another change somewhere North of there, such as Peterborough or York. And the original itinerary already had further changes needed at Edinburgh and a time critical final one at Glasgow Queen Street.
