Restoration of Level Crossing Gate

Good evening everyone I have just joined and would like to pick your brains regarding going about restoring our level crossing gate at our house we have moved into. It dates back to around 1941 when it was last used and is in pretty poor state but usable. I have put a jockey wheel on it so I can still use it. I believe it is made of oak and has two large oak pillars which are around a foot wide and 6 foot tall. Would anybody know of anyone, or the best way to try and preserve this gate rather than removing it please? I hope this is the right area to put it in.

It is very likely that rot will have got into most or all of the joints, causing it to be wobbly and so on. You need to consider replacing the sections of timber at the joints - insert new wood and scarph join to the older timber where it is sound.

I suggest that contacting a local building preservation group may get you advice and assistance on what to do - also contact the local museums conservation department. Or if you can find a good local joiner......
