Responsibility for road running up to station

Hello, my local station has a short road running up to it ("Station Approach") which also happens to be a cycle route. It has a very large and deep pothole (and a couple of small ones) and I tried to report that online to my local council but cannot as they say it is not maintained by them. I'm just wondering if roads leaning up to stations are maintained by the train companies or if anyone knows who might be responsible for it? Thanks for any help

Thanks, I've had a look and it confirms that the Council are not responsible for maintenance but just says "private street manager". A very interesting resource, though. I noticed some routes nearby are public roads and not owned by farms as I had previously thought.

It's very likely the road is owned by Network Rail. But the situation becomes more complex as the station is probably managed by your local Train Operating Company (TOC) who may or may not have responsibility. I suggest you contact both NR and the TOC pointing out the problems.

Thank you; it seems South Western Railway manage the station but I'm sure I've often seen Network Rail there in the past. I'll try emailing one and copying the other in. I've got a bee in my bonnet about this pothole now! Every time I see it it's bothering me. It is over 1m and deep.

What a fascinating website! Even more fascinating it shows the streets and street names for a housing estate that's currently being built near me (it's currently mostly a mud pit it's that early in construction)!!

If it is listed as "private street manager", then NR would either be the landowner or have an third party agreement with the landowner, and very likely NR will be the one that is responsible for maintenance.

Be prepared to getting into a "not my issue guv" quagmire between the county / local council, the TOC and Network Rail and potentially another landowner as to who foots the responsibility and resolves it. It will be someone obviously, but I find it likely everyone will point the finger at everyone else, certainly at the beginning.

I understand that, in England, the responsibility lies with the owner (the one whose name is on the title deeds). They cannot pass legal responsibility on to a third party. If they have a management agreement with the TOC, they still have the responsibility to ensure that any such management is carried out.

I can’t see pothole repair on a road outside a station ever being part of the TOC’s responsibility, it’s surely NR‘s problem to solve.
