To all I have an interview for the above role on Friday 13th with Northern. What questions are they likely to ask and any tips from yourselves on how to get through this interview would be great. At present I am doing research on background of Northern.

I'm assuming it will either be related to rostering or train diagramming, mostly asking you knowledge of spreadsheets / excel, communication / interpersonal skills and how you would feel working with a system that has to operate within the strictest sets of rules, especially if it is traincrew rostering.

From my experience, Northern are very good at encouraging you with your answers and not putting you on the spot too much.... better than many companies. I wouldn't worry too much about knowledge of rosters or diagrams as most of the training will be provided by a mentor should you start.

Thanks for that. The role will involve compiling traincrew weekly and daily rosters in accordance with train crew agreements. The role will also involve keeping and maintaining appropriate records which will need to be update and accessible to assist area teams and the resource planning manager. I have no experience of using spreadsheets/excel, but i am now going to familarise myself with those applications. I have done background research on Northern e.g. how it started, operating areas, awards it won etc and I am now going to think about examples I can give from previous work experiences to match role. I am just hoping there is no trick questions.

In other words this is a traincrew roster clerk.

Most companies use either of two rostering programmes - Crewplan or Erma.

You need to be an organised sort of person to do this job. Paperwork has to be 100% accurate. Able to keep calm under pressure, phone ringing when you're in the middle of something, etc. Experience of managing people would be useful as well.
