Just a bit of idle curiosity.

I've noticed that the egress on a 730 (which curiously has nothing over it to disincentivise its misuse) has the usual T-key reset thing in the middle but without a T-key slot visible anywhere on the handle, the bit where it would normally be is plated over.

How are these reset? Does the guard need to use a screwdriver to remove the cover over the T-key slot before doing so? Or are they somehow reset without one?

With respect, those who need to know how to reset a safety system will have been trained and assessed to do so.

Just wanting to satisfy my idle curiosity, you could say that about anything operational on the railway. I have no intention of using* an egress unless necessary, nor resetting** an egress under any circumstances.

If anyone feels it shouldn't be Googlable public knowledge, a direct message would alleviate my curiosity, if it is DMed to me I won't post it. I'm just intrigued!

* I have done this.
** I have not done this, I told staff about it afterwards, who agreed my reason for using it (that a Thameslink driver had walked off having terminated at Blackfriars without releasing the doors) was valid. They reset it.

With respect, I suspect that an answer to the effect that it could be done without a T-key would be sufficient, if indeed that is the case.

Yep just high level, e.g. "there's a hidden T key slot" or "you need a special tool" or "you just push it back having closed the door correctly" or whatever it is. I don't intend to do it so don't need the detailed procedure (and would agree there is no need for that to be public), I'm just curious!

Given that the Class 196s use a ’traditional’ T-key reset, it puzzles me as to why the Class 730s differ.

Whilst I don’t know, I did see a driver of a 730 help a ‘yoof’ off the train today who had evidently pulled the alarm / egress just after departure from MK today. The reset took a couple of seconds, however which way he did it. Albeit the up fasr was blocke dfor 5 mins. The kid scarpered, probably because I gave him my very meanest stare.

It's possible it's reset entirely from the driving cab, that's how it works on 701s.

Because they were built by different manufacturers?

Indeed - but given my recent experience of rolling stock procurement, I'm surprised that such little details have not been micromanaged!
