This isn't really a careers question per se, as I already work on the rails, I'm just wondering what general policy is towards military reserves? I work for GA, but am interested in re-joining the military as a reservist.
Any help much appreciated!
thanks

First thing I did on getting a job offer from a TOC was ditch my reserve liability.

The Cotswolds vs The Middle East? No competition!

I had no idea you could do that. How do you go about doing that?

Thanks!

Ah - It was because I was made redundant rather than simply retiring or PVRing.

They gave all those made redundant the opportunity to waive their liability; it would have been a mite unfair to tell someone their services were no longer required, only to hold the potential threat of additional service over them at the same time!

Ah, so you got redundancy, huh? Jammy begger! I would've done anything for that! Voluntary?

Looks like I'm stuck with my 6 years then. Well, 1 down 5 to go!

And... Apologies for hijacking the thread - and to give an answer to the OP -I'm not sure of GA's policy about time off for training and mobilization, it's something you'd need to ask your line manager / HR about. But have a look at this website: http://www.sabre.mod.uk/ - there's loads of info on there about employer / reservist employee relationship. There are some TOCs that publicly back reservist employees such as EMT, FSR, and XC. It might be worth showing the site to your Line Manager and taking it from there.

I'm not sure that many at our place would share your sentiment, but then everyone wants different things I guess

Non-volunteer. Gutted - until I got the contract from FGW. Now I'm happier (vis-a-vis work) than for many, many a year.

JC, any news on the 'working during resettlement leave' front? BTW, no joining instructions from FGW yet!

Pete...ref working during resttlement...yep all good and signed off, although FTPE won't be allowed to pay me for the GRT part 1st 7 weeks. No way around it with First either as they had to sign the waiver stating that they wouldnt pay me during the initial work attachment. I'm certainly not going to complain about that tho, given that I will still have my wage from Her Majesty during that time.

They have agreed though that my employment start date will still be as of the course start date, which is good for me as I can still start the clock ticking for rewards/benefits etc.

Looking fwd to cracking on with it all to be honest; Joining instructions are in the post apparently :D
