The 321s look a LOT nicer in Silverlink livery and presumably Lundun Midlund livery too but I don't think that any are yet?

cant compare the two fleets as 321's are home to bletcley most nights and operate over a smaller area than the 319's, and 319's only come back to cauldwell when either nedded for exams or to fix a fault/re-vinyl

Thanks, I thought Cricklewood was reinstated so FCC didn't have to stable at Selhust anymore?

Hmmm... <D
From my own point of view, this topic started out merely as a jocular comparison of how a Citroën Suxo vaugely resembled a 321...And now we've got SR related gen being thrown all over the place!:D:razz:
(Not that I have any objection to it at all...I just find it unintentionally amusing! :))

GhostCav: Loved your comparison of a Corsa and a Pendolino...Really made me chuckle that one! :D
Interestingly enough, I used to envied a mate for being able to drive his Corsa about and wished that I could do the same thing (This was before I passed my Cat. C test) - Then about six months later, I started learning to drive in one! Now I really envy Pendo and IC-225 drivers, so I'm hoping that my former trend outlined above may well continue here... ;)

Anyhow...I'm surprised that no-one's yet mentioned another such comparison that's been starting us all in the face for a good 30+ years now, and that's how a Pacer looks very much like a British Leyland single-decker!:D:razz:

Although I might've only noticed it because I'm also a bus enthusiast...I dunno... ;)

(P.S: Before anyone says so...I already know who built most of the 14x fleet! :))

Did you know that pacers originally had cable operated brakes!!!
Also that BR was basically forced to buy pacers by the tory goverment who were trying to sell off Leyland to foriegn investers to recoup the money that they had ploughed into it. Well thatcher hated railways anyway so I guess her plan was to make rail travel as uncomfortable as possible & get more people on the roads to pay that lovely tax.

Pacers are literally buses that go on train tracks arent I right?
There made from more or less the same stuff.

Aye...They're practically articulated buses with flanged wheels. Indeed, a lot of Pacers use fixed single-axle wheelsets as opposed to the conventional two-axle bogies used on most other rolling stock!

Anyway...Have a peek at what Leyland came up with before they started knocking out Pacers by the dozen...:D:razz:

Or all of them do!;)

Basically Pacers are a bus combined with a chassis knocked together out of a girder, a few coily springs to fool people into thinking they have suspension & two axles of the most screechy metal possible to pretend to be a wheel set. They have bus doors that wobble around at speed, usually bending so much they knock out the traction interlock switch on trainwire 4 & slam the emergency brakes in. The cab's are noisy & have gaps to allow chavs to put burning tickets through & distract the driver as he is putting out the small fire. You can tell traincrew who work on pacers all day by the fact that they can't hear anything & tend to shout a lot.

Hail again! <D

Hmmm...Good point. However, we don't have any of the things down this end of the country AFAIK, so I can be forgiven for not knowing much about them! :D:razz:

The one time that I went down Bristol TM, I saw a couple parked just to the North of the station. Do those normally operate down there, or was that just a stock movement? :)
(It was a fair while ago, and I think they had Northern livery on 'em!)

Sounds to me a bit like a 455 with some major improvement work done to it!
(Sorry, but I never liked 455s...)

You mean to say that Pacers actually have brakes?

I must admit I'm surprised that Leyland chose to use bus doors on 'em...Though a bus is still a moving vehicle, buses are often slower than trains (Not that the Pacer's top-end of 50mph is much faster!), and on a bus ye'd generally have to get past the driver to try and alight whilst in motion!

...And would a fire on a Pacer be a bad thing, assuming that no one was hurt? :razz:8-):D
You can tell traincrew who work on pacers all day by the fact that they can't hear anything & tend to shout a lot.
I wonder how that noise would compare with the cab of the APT whilst the backup diesel behind it is running?
(APT-Ps had four sets of pretty damn big back-up engines in each rake for use in case of OHLE failure. Although not usable for traction purposes (AFAIK) they would keep the trains' electrical and catering systems running, so that passengers could still enjoy BR's overpriced coffee whilst waiting for a tow off of a Thunderbird...)

Now I wonder...Given that I'd run an HST up to 175mph, a Pendo up to 200mph, and an APT up to 550mph...What could I get a Pacer to do if I was given free reign on one?... :shock:8-);)

Apart from instant dismisal you would probably get about 100mph out of a pacer, well they are 75mph units:roll: although I seem to remember before OTMR figures of around 90mph being possible as long as you held on tight.

I think you would find that you would be able to control your lust for speed if you were driving trains. After all I love speed as well & have (on private roads of course) seen insane speeds on my Fireblade but still manage to keep my trains at the correct speeds.

Funny if the Conservatives hated the railways how the period pre-97 resulted in the construction of almost all 2nd generation light rail & tram systems & the biggest number of new stations opened or reopened since the Second World War.

Well, I'd certainly have a damn good "bash" at it anyway!;)

I'm guessing that revving a Pacer up to full wack and getting her moving at about 80-90mph to the summit of Shap could be a good start, then stick her in true neutral and let the incline, and the Laws of Physics do the rest! 8-)

Does 115-130mph sound feasible? :shock::D<D

Aye, I certainly wouldn't mind driving trains as a job, and I'm sure that I would follow all of the procedures correctly too...As I wouldn't want to lose a darn good job like that, especially if I'm legally driving Pendos along at 140mph! :D

It'd be nice if there was a large loop of track somewhere with a high speed limit (Say 450mph) that we could safely do impromptu rail speed record attempts on though...Does the old Derby test loop still exist? :)

Stick a pacer in engine only when moving and the SSF should kick in and apply the brakes...

Funny if the Conservatives hated the railways how the period pre-97 resulted in the construction of almost all 2nd generation light rail & tram systems & the biggest number of new stations opened or reopened since the Second World War.

I said Thatcher hated railways.
Margeret Thatcher in power 1979-1990..:?

During that period lines were shut, the railways funding was slashed, speedlink for instance, was disbanded as unprofitable leading to massive increase in road transportation of freight. Releated was the closure of britains coal & steel industry's leading to even more cuts in railfreight.
The funding for APT was pulled out from under BR, depot's closed to save money that was getting tighter & tighter.

During the major years they finally got rid of the railways (or at least they thought). They rushed through the whole privatisation plan leaving the railways in a right state knowing that they needed to do it before they lost the next election. Thus railtrack started 1st April 1994, the TOC's started shortly afterwards with enough conditions in it to ensure bringing it back under one company would be costly & almost impossible for some time.

Many stations & a few lines did (re)open under railtrack as initially there was an increase in investment when things looked peachy to the shareholders. Also helped by the fact that the goverment was actually pouring in more money than they had for years to keep the privatisation looking good.

Now we are left with a system that may look nice on the outside but is a total shambles on the inside & it still costs the current goverment more now then it did when we were BR.

It's well documented & I remember well the railway under the torys as BR through all the railtrack fiasco times as I was working on them at the time.
