Requirements before Applying

i'm new here and trying to find out some more information, i'm interested in joining Scotrail and becoming a train driver, i know theres always competition for this position and so i need to get my foot in the door first. i was looking at the guards position, could anyone tell me what the application process is like, for example what kind of tests and stuff. Also, i'm living in the United states and have been for six years, since i've been away for so long do i have to live in the UK for a certain amount of time before applying?

The tests at the moment comprise of the group bourdon or the SCAAT, whatever is in vogue at the present time. There is also a one to one role play with whoever is taking the tests, this will imitate a possible on train scenario and mainly concentrate on customer service, you'll sell them a pretend ticket, they'll give you pretend money and have a request of some sort relating to their (usually) disability. I believe there is also now a requirement to do a Mock public announcement. You will also have a structured interview, this will involve set questions such as; talk about a time you were involved in an emergency or unusual occurrence? There used to be a basic interpretation of english and a ticket checking and selling test, not sure about this currently, but I will find out ASAP, probably tomorrow when I get a hold of a newbie. Not sure about your entitlement to work in the UK, i'd advise you to check the Department of Work and Pensions website or other relevant goverment department. PM me if you need/want any further info, though you will have to make 5 posts on this site first I believe. I'll update tomorrow regardless though with exact tests. Worry about a possible interview after that, where I will give you more specific information if you wish.

thank you, i mean i am a UK citizen, but have been out of the country for so long i dont know if i had to reside in the UK for a certain amount of time before applying, the information you gave is great, yea if you have any more info on this would be great also....thanks.

That's what I thought you meant. I wouldn't think that would be a problem at all, just apply ASAP, employment situation isn't the best over here at the moment. Lots of people going for relatively few jobs, so it's a good idea to get cracking sooner rather than later, not to mention the time it can take to get back to you also. Application is done online initially, so fire away when it suits you. I'll get you more info tomorrow.
