Cheers for the gen, I'll have to use that working when I do some more shack scratching up that way. I need platforms 7, 8 and 10 but I'm not convinced about 2. I might have done it but I'll have to check if it's coloured in in the Quail.

Requeststop: Aside from the ticket faff it sounds like a good day on the Isle of Wight. The graffiti must be fairly recent as it wasn't at Lake when I visited in 2012.

Nearly 4 years can make a difference. The graffiti was the most noticeable thing I saw in the station.

To everyone: I have nearly completed my 22 days. Tomorrow I travel from Paddington to Truro on the 10:05 hoping to get a good seat forward, seaward side ex Exeter (we all know) for the dining!

That will be my last trip of my 22 days. I know I am a few days down on my reports but it will be made up in time and photos and a map! They are all in progress and I'll post asap. This weekend I have done a few outstanding lines to the South East and South West of London and I'll report on them as well. Tonight Sunday, I've had a marvellous meal just over the road from Paddington station at the Pride of Paddington and boy what a great British meal it was. I've got ten extra day with friends in Truro with no rail journeys planned until I come back to London on the 25th February. So a bit of patience for the end of my 22 day report, I'll get there I promise. So for now from a compleat and happy Requeststop for now, Cheers!

Wow you've done well on this trip, not much track left to cover!

Hope the dining service is still as excellent as it was when I last did it some years ago!

In Cornwall, typing up the last few days rides. So here is the latest which was East Anglia.

Day 19 East Anglia

So up very early to prepare to wipe East Anglia off my map. So to Paddington for the Circle line to Kings Cross. Experience means that I know there is a long walk around to the Circle platforms for the direct run to KX. I am hoping no delays along the line as it is rush hour but I get to the station with 18 minutes to spare. Along with many others I wait for the information screens to tell us what platform the train is due to leave. It’s 9 and not 3 that RRT tells us. So we walk onto the platform and in trundles the train and drops it’s passengers from Royston. So the 07:44 to Kings Lynn is now ready to leave as it does – on time. I’m sitting in the middle first. First stop is Cambridge is the first call and we are 2L but have time to make up for the split and the remaining six stops to Lings Lynn. The line that is new to me is Ely- Kings Lynn. We depart Cambridge on time at 08:38 and I notice that the fields at Waterbeach were very frosty and that the platform was also very icy. The first time I’ve noticed frost since I arrived in the UK on the 6th January. At the approaches to Ely there is a wonderful view of the cathedral which is even better than the view of Lincoln cathedral. We slow down out of Ely for the single line junction at Ely North to let a London bound train to pass into the station and I get a glimpse of the Ely avoiding line and the branches east and west which I have already covered and now I move northwards onto my new line to Kings Lynn.

Flat – isn’t it – Norfolk! Between Littleport and Downham I notices fields with hundreds of swans, and I mean hundreds of them, all seemingly happy to be on land. At Downham Market station the buildings are **** but on the London side of the station there was a ticket office and a pub/café called the Railway Arms and a signal box. At Watlingham the car park was about half full and no one got on or off the train and there was a signal box. Frost was covering all the fields to Kings Lynn.
At Kings Lynn Station you can see that the station is immaculately kept. There is a good restaurant/café. I had a sausage sandwich with mayonnaise and a coffee as a late breakfast. They were selling “Cornish pasties” which weren’t. As a full blooded Cornishman I know that a Cornish pasty is a protected species these days had has to be made in Cornwall of Cornish grown and produced ingredients. I hadn’t the heart to point out to them that they were breaking the law and as I type this I taking a bite out of my Welsh Stilton……..ooops! A wander around the streets by the station for a few minutes and then back on the train for the 09:45 GA service back towards Kings Cross. I noticed that Magdalen Road is now called Watlington on both sides of the road now but the signal box is still called Magdalen Road. At Ely, a quick walk across the platform for the GA 09:50 ex Peterborough to Ipswich at 10:32 which leaves exactly to time. On this service my new line is from Ely Dock Junction to Chippenham Junction which is in Suffolk and nor Wiltshire I’m pleased to find out. There is a delay outside of Ipswich because we are “waiting for a platform to become available”, so I keep my eyes open for any passing train to leave the station but as it turns out “The Cambridge-Ipswich has failed and is being shunted out of Platform 4”. So the passing freight to the left of the train has nothing to do with it, but another train ex Lowestoft gets a run into the station and we arrive in Ipswich 6L. The connection to Manningtree is over the bridge on Platform 2. The 11:43 also is 6L when we depart and the train announcer says something over the speaker system that is totally unintelligible. First Class in both coaches are full but it’s only one stop. We arrive still 6L and there is a quick walk down the platform to connect to the 12:00 to Harwich – a brand new branch for me in dull weather for me to bounce up and down.
The first noticeable item on the landscape is at Mistley where there is a remarkable chimney announcing it is the property of the EDME MALT EXTRACTION WORKS.
Wrabness is the next station down the river with some nice views across to the other bank. The station is somewhat dainty. No Passenger movement Harwich International is next, Again, Riverside and seaside views and the ferry port and docks. Lots of freight sidings with a lot of ballast wagons. The station is what you’d expect for a ferry terminal but totally empty. So to Dovercourt. Lots of warehouses, portacabins and emptiness along the way to a few houses and a station which is just a platform with a large shelter. Then to Harwich Town which is a station that has obviously seen much better days.

So the return to Manningtree on the 12:28 and obvious reason for it to be late. A couple of locals get off the train at Dovercourt; At International 2 more get off the train and the hoards trying to board the train number 7. One woman was waiting at Wrabness and at Mistley in spite of the very large Welcome sign only one man was prepared to leave the place on this train, and so back to Manningtree for the ride back down to Colchester where I’ll scout for lunch. So the train of choice is the 12:00 ex Norwich and it is 3L in Manningtree and leaves at 12:56.
Well what a waste of time Colchester turned out to be. There was nothing around the station area worth taking in for a half and a pub lunch. So a coffee at the station and wait for the 13:56 to Walton-on the-Naze via Colchester Town. Now here are two lines I’ve never covered before. Certainly back in the mid to late seventies I did a day trip to Clacton but I never covered the Town branch or the Walton line so today is the day! It’s a slow ride into Town station and a huge diversionary half circle of a turn to get there. Approaching the station we let out a returning service back to the main line and slink into the Town station. To be honest I think it would be quicker to walk.

At the Town station a number of students get on the train and we pull out, again slowly and we are hardly out of the triangle that we are in Hythe. Again I’m thinking that it would be quicker to walk.
Withenhoe has old buildings on one side of the station, all boarded up and sadly out of use. The same at Alresford and at Bentley, the next stop though, there is some work being done on the footbridge. At Weeley there is nothing but the same old boarded up old station buildings and very basic shelters. At Thorpe-le-Soken (Please change for Clacton) we have to wait for the following faster Clacton service which misses out the Town branch and the intermediate stations and leaves before us. Our next station is Kirby Cross which is right against a housing area and then Frinton-on-Sea which has a single platform with a tidy but disused shelter on one side of the station and what seems like function able but locked premises on the other working side of the station.
Walton-on-the-Naze looks like a typical Essex seaside resort closed for the winter and is sitting there waiting for the summer to come and bring with it the East End day trippers. So back to Colchester, this time changing at Thorpe for the faster Clacton train and to connect to the 15:43 service calling at Marks Tey, for a connection to my final branch to Sudbury and back, finally clearing up East Anglia. So again a quick hop over the bridge to the Sudbury platform whilst waiting for the connecting train from London, and the crew had to wake up a deeply inebriated man, fast asleep and apparently travelling onto Colchester. I have to say that the crew handled the situation really well, as no one would have any idea what may have happened when they woke him up. Fortunately he wasn’t violent at all and the crew were able to get him onto the Colchester bound train.

So my final branch of the day and departure was prompt. At Chapel and Wakes there is a sort of museum with quite a few carriages and a small but decent signal box. Burres station is a basically a single platform with a small wooden shelter with a display of the history of the station. Sudbury is a single platform; an end of the line halt with just enough space for the two carriage train to stop at before heading back to Marks Tey, which is what I did after a couple of photos to prove I’d been there. So we left at 16:32 to connect to Liverpool Street at 16:59, on the 16:53 ex Colchester. My day day done.

A most productive time in Anglia and Essex, I think it's actually a fair distance between Colchester and Colchester Town stations, I wouldn't walk it!

Looking forward to the rest of the read when it's ready!

It's a good mile and a half walking between Colchester & Colchester Town, and not the flattest of routes.

I only walked it when in search of food and by the time I reached somewhere from Colchester which had food it was quicker to walk to Town than double back to Colchester main

What a shame you didn't appear find The Bricklayers. Only 5 minutes from Colchester Station, a cracking pub on the north side of the railway, away from the town centre.

The walk between the two Colchester stations is best done from St Botolphs, .....sorry Colchester Town (it's downhill). A stroll through Castle Park is most enjoyable.

Day 20 - Pot Luck 1

Weekends around London and engineering work so the last two days in the capital are to be pot luck – if it works it works if not…..well then I tried. So to Charing Cross for the 09:10 to Ashford. There are a couple of lines I’ve not managed to cover from there and most of this line I’ve never travelled over. So into Charing Cross comes the 07:14 ex Folkestone arriving at 08:52 soon to become the 09:10 to Ramsgate. As we cross the Thames I see the new London Architecture, the Gherkin, the Shard, the Cheese grater, and one that looks like an electric shaver without the circular blades on top and pass the mess that in now London Bridge. We get to Tonbridge and immediately I change my plans and decide to take the 10:04 to Strood. We are 7L at Strood because of a level crossing problem and so because of the cold and showery weather I take the 11:06 to Charing Cross via Bexleyheath, the 10:54 ex Gillingham arriving supposedly at 12:13. We got stuck at Kidbrooke station– signals at Lewisham we were originally told, but that changed to a vehicle hitting a bridge! Well most people got off the train after 15 minutes, and went for the bus. The train manager or whatever they are called these days did try to keep us up to date and when a few people arrived on the platform to be told we’d been waiting 20 minutes they walked off, well just as suddenly as we stopped, we were on the move again 27L at Blackheath and 25L at Charing Cross! Talk about Pot Luck!
So I traversed over to Waterloo to look at the Ian Allen bookshop – nothing of interest there, and then caught the 13:23 to Alton! We were all on time to Alton and then the return to Aldershot for Guildford via the Ascot – Guilford service. So I caught the 14:44 SW service towards Waterloo changing at Aldershot for the 15:08 to Guildford via Ash which is a line I had mostly new to me. On time at Guildford to cross over a bridge once again to Platform 1A for the 15:28 Stopper to Waterloo via Epsom. Satisfied with my day’s travels and wanting to take in some entertainment in London I called an end to the journeys for the day. More pot luck tomorrow!

Day 21 Pot Luck again.

So to Sunday and my penultimate day of travels on my 22 day all line rover. There are a few lines for me to clear and I know I’m not going to clear all lines this trip, Blaenau letting me down to start, and so over to St Pancras on the underground – Ah – no Circle line – engineering works and like most non residents I don’t trust buses in London and so a taxi is the more stable option. So back upstairs to the Paddington taxi rank and I get to St Pancras in plenty of time to get to Platform 12 for the 09:37 Javelin to Ashford arriving 40 minutes later in mid-Kent. No electrical plug points on these trains so a bonus point lost already. Actually I am so surprised that there are so many carriages with no electrical points supplied these days. It really must be a point made in all franchise renewals that these must be supplied for the travellers.

It was a swift ride to Ashford and before I knew it we arrive on time at Platform 6. So next to Tonbridge on the 10:14 ex Tonbridge to Charing Cross departing Ashford at 10:35. My plan is to cross right over to Redhill. The 8 coach train arrives right on time as it starts to rain.
The stations are mostly concrete block constructions with shelters, Headcorn has modern buildings with toilets and passing line through the station, though on the London side there are just basic shelters. Staplehurst is also modern-ish with Bridge and lifts, a car park and a ticket office on the London side. Marden, only has a car park and ticket office and shelter, Paddock Wood is a network rail centre and so has a lot more substantial buildings at the station. Tonbridge – we are on time and cross the platforms for the Redhill service at which is provided by Southern at 11:36. The weather is brighter and now no rail. Not too much to say about this journey except that Leigh is pronounced Lie and I saw and reported two deer, line-side between Edenbridge and Godstone which was reported to the signallers.
At Redhill we arrive at the far end of the platform 1 – the London end. Then there is a four minute wait for the 10:59 Southern service ex Bognor Regis for London Bridge. As we approach East Croydon there is a very complicated announcement about changing trains because of the closure of London Victoria. After arrival at London Bridge I decided to forgive Chiltern and took the tube to Marylebone and completed the Chiltern side of my journey all the way up to Aylesbury Vale Parkway and then back one stop to Aylesbury and then back down to Marylebone to complete that line coverage. I was really not in the mood to cover any more lines that day as again I wanted to enjoy London that evening and in fact had a great meal at the Pride of Paddington just over the road from the station (Praed Street side). The next morning I am due to travel down to Truro on the Cornish Riviera . My final journey on my 22 day Rover ticket.

Hi everyone. I guess you'd thought you'd seen the last of this thread. Sorry if you are thinking of topping yourself.
I've calculated that I have 54 sections of line still to cover to complete all the UK rail network. Maybe in the autumn. After that I can travel around the UK at leisure.

Anyhow, I've logged on to tell you all that I'm back home in Bangkok, having extended my stay in the UK by 10 days, all of it in my beloved Cornwall during which I covered all the lines except Liskeard - Looe.

Also - I have opened a Flickr account and have been editing my photo's and have posted the first 10 days of my photo's in albums if you're interested. Now they are not the best of photo's having been taken on my mobile phone and the quality is not the best in all cases, some are indeed diabolical, some are quite good if I say so myself. Sometimes there is too much sunlight but I think they are worthy of my record. All are open for copying if you like.

The photo's are of the stations, some of the trains I travelled on, some of the sights I saw, some track layouts etc. A couple of feet on seats ( a particular hate). All the photo's are edited and during the next few days I'll upload the rest. The Albums are day by day , Day 1, Day 2 etc. Anyhow I hope you enjoy, and thanks for all your earlier comments.

If the link below doesn't work do a search for "requeststop" under people in Flickr.

All the very best to you all and "cheers" from an exhausted and still jet-lagged Requeststop happily at home in the warmth of my home in Bangkok!

Day 11 Sheepless in Sunderland (Almost)

Still no sheep but plenty of free range plastic bags flapping about in the wind. At 13:11 we pass a road sign that informs us that we are entering the city of Darlington and pass through the infamous Teesside Airport station, and then in rapid order I spy a field of sheep, and one of cows! Brave souls. Perhaps the local rustlers are a feared of the empty station too? Arrival at Darlington on time with tons of time to kill. So I took a few snaps and walk down the road towards the city centre. By the time I reached the first roundabout, my heart sank. Firstly there was nothing to see, no shops, shopping mall, church, statues of Queen Vic with a phallus, and secondly, it started to drizzle, so I made my way back to the station and took shelter in the Pumpkin waiting room where I bought the latest RAIL magazine and remembered why I’d cancelled my subscription two years ago. I did the crossword in 15 minutes.

Just to leap backwards a bit, you didn't give the place much of a chance. Bearing in mind you were in a town of 100,000+ people and you only bothered to walk as far as the roundabout at the bottom of Vic Rd then whos fault's that

There's a rather large amount of shops, a covered market, quite a big shopping centre (Cornmill if you want to know) and a rather magnificent church with a spire so big I'm amazed you couldn't see it at any point from your walk down the hill.

Wikipedia here to save me saying any more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darlington

Good reports throughout your 22 days all the same!

Thanks

37038 (Disgruntled Darlington local ;))

Aye, I can vouch for Calum and say that Darlo is a pretty decent place, but the area around the station isn't the most pleasant and doesn't give the best impression.

Good reads though, jealous of your coverage ;)

All Javelin's have plug sockets, they're between the seats ;)

They should point out where the hell they are more clearly then.

Yes I can appreciate that finding a place close to the station may be easy if you know the location. Unfortunately I was hoping that with a limited and tightish schedule, I was looking for something to hit me quickly. To be Honest Horsham (later in the trip) was a massive disappointment. When I've cleared the UK I'll have time during later trips to spend time in some of the more "interesting" time.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Aside from the major delay on Southeastern, a good couple of days there!
The major delay was interesting in that it formed a good study of peoples patience. There were many who after 10 minutes decided to try to find a bus into London. Some left the train a few minutes before we could go forward. I think those of us who stayed on the train actually got to our destination well before many who left the train.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I've completed posting my photo's on flickr. I've learned a few things to do on flickr that I'll change in time. I lost a days photos sadly. Most probably during transfer from my mobile to my laptop for editing. I've made a new Album about my trip to the far west - Penzance, St Erth and St Ives with rail photos and other scenery of the area. I've some more of the Tamar Line, Calstock etc and of Newquay and Falmouth. They'll be added in the next couple of days. Unless I get white flags of surrender.

The link is below. Comments welcome. As I've heard nothing yet I guess they are either bloody too plain or no one can open the Albums. Let me know.

Cheers from Thailand for now. Requeststop.

My WiFi at home is not great tonight, either that or Flickr's having a moment, so I haven't seen all the photos but there's a nice variety in there.

I'm amazed semaphores are still in a lot of places down there, it's nice mind! I don't do fancy photos, so I wouldn't worry about it just being phone photos. As long as they're clear what the subject is then all is gravy!

Hi everyone.

Just a post from me on this topic. I have worked out my mileage for the trip and the cost per mile.

I covered 5,818 miles in 178 different journeys. If you add the extra journeys I did down to and around Cornwall, I covered 6,699 miles in 197 journeys.

I've posted my BritRail pass (rather battered) with my name blanked out.

So for my BritRail pass the cost was $955 and so the cost per mile was $0.1641 which at a rate of 1USD = 0.70GBP brings the cost in UK terms to 12pence per mile (approx.)

Also I have completed editing and posting my photos on my flickr account plus a few more from my rail trip in 2013.https://www.flickr.com/photos/140483357@N06/albums

Thanks for your comments and support/ Cheers from Bangkok. 8-)
