Hello everyone

Just few days back my friend got a report for prosecution from south western railways for a short ticket . But we want to resolve the issue as this is the first time as she don't travel frequent in London . But we didn't received any letter from the SWR yet so is it advisable for us to contact them first and accept the mistake or let them send the letter on behalf of them?
And also are the first timers matter generally resolved outside of court?

You need to wait for South western to write to your friend. Once they do your friend needs to engage with the train company and reply to the letter quickly. If they do engage then there is a very good chance they will be offered an out of court settlement ( covering the cost of an anytime single ticket for each journey that your friend didn’t have a valid ticket ( a return = 2 singles plus an amount of circa £150 covering thier administration costs) they need to pay quickly in lieu of being prosecuted and convicted of the crime by the court.
If you look at other threads you will see some excellent advise from @Hadders which gives a good idea of how to reply to the letter from the train company.

The advice is to not contact them until they do, it can take months for them to go back to you

You should wait for the letter. It will help if you let us know what exactly happened, as much as you can - using the formula in the pinned thread:

Please bear in mind the following, when asking for advice in this section:
  • We need to know all relevant facts in order to assist you, including, for example:
    • The stations* where you actually started & finished your journey
    • The stations* where you changed trains (if applicable);
    • If you presented a ticket(s), the information* stated under "Ticket type", "From", "To", "Route", and any other relevant details;
    • Details of any Railcard(s) held;
    • When and where ticket(s) were purchased, including whether this was prior to the journey commencing;
    • What happened in any encounter with railway staff;
    • Upload copies of any paperwork (with personal details redacted) with your post.

Started from London Waterloo and finished at feltham

No changing trains on this line but previously travelled to Stratford via greater Anglia line

The ticket for short journey was from Twickenham to feltham

16-25 railcard

She entered from London Waterloo and then the ticket was purchased from Twickenham to feltham

He said you will get a letter and you have to pay the amount

So just to confirm your Freind was stopped at Waterloo by an open gate travelling to feltham but only bought a ticket from Twickenham.

Or just so we have it correct was it travelling from Feltham but bought a ticket from Twickenham to London Waterloo and was spoken to by revenue at London Waterloo?

The gate was open
Where were they coming from? You mention Stratford - this is a fare evasion hotspot for people who don’t buy a ticket from their origin. Was contactless or Oyster used to cross London?

Let me clear the gate at Waterloo was open so she entered through it and to get out of feltham she brought a ticket from Twickenham to feltham

No nothing about stratford (she had a valid ticket till that) and to Waterloo she travelled through personal friend car
But gate at Waterloo was open so she entered through it and to get out of feltham she brought a ticket from Twickenham to feltham

So she got a lift, from Stratford to Waterloo. A journey which takes 45 minutes to an hour by car, yet only 20 minutes by simply continuing on the Jubilee line? That’s right, is it?

Did she mention where she started her journey to the staff who stopped her?

So you had a valid ticket from somewhere to Stratford

Got a lift from Stratford to Waterloo, which takes 2-3 times longer than taking the tube and would incur a congestion charge

Went through an open gate at Waterloo (which I've never seen in many years of travel in London)

Bought an e-ticket from Twickenham to Feltham, saving a whole 65p on the Oyster fare from Waterloo

Is there anything you'd like to correct or revise?

I think from #5 that they travelled the other way, arriving at Stratford by GA, presumably with a valid ticket so as to exit the station.

Can your Freind or yourself upload any documents with any personal information redacted so we can see what was issued and why? So we can best help you!
