While I was waiting for my train a couple of weeks ago at Burley Park, a man was busy measuring up the platforms and taking photographs of the platform furniture. When he asked to take a photo of the bench I was sitting on, I asked what he was doing. He said he was working for a contractor who had been asked for a quote to replace the platforms at the station because they'd be 'out of gauge for the new trains that'll be coming through'.

What new trains are these? Are replacement platforms really being planned for or have I misunderstood something?

Thanks in advance

The platforms there are very rickety and part of them is made of wood. They may also need to be extended slightly, I can't remember.
