Repainting Hornby locos

I'm interested in purchasing a Hornby 00 Class 43 and re painting it. Thing is, I wouldn't know where to start. Wondering if I could get some tips.

I'm thinking re branding to either FGW barbie, or EMT.

Could probably do with knowing the basics. How to actually go about repainting and where/how to get or possibly make decals. I know I could buy either but want to do it on the cheap and eventually want to have a full 8 car HST.

I think you are probably best putting this in a proper model rail forum (RMWeb, New Railway Modellers, Model Rail Forum, etc, etc) however, I do know that 'crafty computer paper' offer DIY transfer paper for PC printers, but be warned the transfer paper is actually clear and you will need a printer that has white ink if you wish to have white on the transfer.
