The recent decision by FirstScotrail to remove all the interior sliding doors from their 156 units has basically turned these units into mobile wind tunnels. Add the inadequate or absent heating, and with the recent change of weather.
Travelling in these units is now a nightmare for both the paying passengers and crew!
Does anybody else suffer these problems?

They never let you close them on Northern 156s anyway, best thing to do is sit near the middle of the train.

I thought there was something slightly different about the 156 I used on Saturday, can't say I had a issue about the inside of the train being a wind tunnel in fact it was no warmer or colder then usual onboard the train.

Is this the interior door between units? Or was there a manual/power internal door to enter the vestibule, it's been a while since I was on a 156...

Saying that, I'd rather be on a 156 in this weather instead of a turbostar - the doors are huge when it's belowing freezing outdoors.

The gangway doors will remain

The internal doors are between the gangway and main cabin
This is probably an access issue and/or cost saving
As is typical, it was never an issue on older rolling stock, in some cases quite a lot of doors to pass through
Equally in some cases the power operated ones had failed, but you could still open it manually

The internal doors on the Class 156 were somewhat redundant
Even from new, they were normally positioned and held in the open position
If the door mechanism fails then it is a long walk to the other door
Equally, in the event of an evacuation and door failure, that is quite a distance to cover

Never mind, in a few years they will be ripping the toilets out!

EMT 156410 emerged from refresh with it's gangway door missing and so i presume thats the plan for the rest of the fleet.
I personaly think it's better. It opens the area up a bit and makes it easier to get cycles in.

I was on a two different Northern 158s the other week and both of those had interior door issues. The first one wouldn't shut, and second one didn't even have any!!!

I came a right cropper the other week.
Was on the first empties to Liverpool. 3x158's, two of them ex-Wessex.
On arrival at Liverpool i walked through the ex Wessex's which are unique on EMT's 158 fleet in that although a saloon door open button is provided, the doors actually open automatically. Just as i got used to not having to push the button i entered the third unit, ex-Central, and promptly went "Splat" straight into the door!

I can't remember the last time I was on a 156 with the doors shut, they are normally locked open anyway.

A couple of the Northern ones in the Newcastle area have them unlocked sometimes, bit annoying when they close everytime it goes around a bend.

The only time I've ever noticed them is when they started closing on people waiting to get off at Bargeddie station (due to the cant on that stretch of line). So I can hardly say that I'm going to miss them.

The 'barbie' 156's had the sliding doors removed during their refurb, and incidentally seem to have much more reliable heating. It makes for slightly easier acess at the 52 end for wheelchairs also. I haven't noticed any removed from other units though, many are still in place as far as i can see.
