Remarkable hunting oscillation

Worst example I've encountered is on a 222 down the MML. It just shows how a normally well-riding train can be influenced so much by track quality.

You get thrown around quite a bit on 387s between Cambridge and Ely (and back). Must be a problem with the train as 700s, 720s and 755s ride perfectly fine over this section of track

What’s the difference between hunting oscillation and track which simply moves from side to side? I’ve experienced a lot of movement on Halton Curve heading from Frodsham to Chester where I think the line speeds are pretty low but I’ve still nearly lost my coffee at times! It seems worst just after crossing the M56 but it always seems okay in the other direction.

Oh I’ve had some very rough class 170 riding on this stretch along with 755s. Just ignored it as a driver thinking it was the leading bogie but also had it as a passenger on XC.

I haven't felt it as a passenger on the 755, even when sitting right behind the driver

Noticed very bad ride quality a few weeks ago on the single track line from Alton especially given the desiros typically have good ride quality.

Yes, I noticed that this afternoon/evening on return trip to Waterloo - in both directions on the same bit of track between Farnham and Bentley. Mind you, nothing like a trip down the Portsmouth Direct in slam door days. That was really exciting - especially in the leading car when you hit track defect of some sort at one of the level crossings at line speed. It was there for months - I used to wait for it and wonder if this time we really would derail!

It's a lot more noticeable when sitting rather than standing on the DLR I find.

DLR got so bad in the early days they changed the rail profile to try and help calm it down.

To turn it from the IETs to the 387s ( ), on GWR they're quite lively when running on the relief lines, certainly from Paddington to beyond Slough.

But yeah, as pointed out upthread, we'll be hard pressed to find a better one than the DLR!

I find the GN 387s can be quite lively on the down fast between New Southgate and Potters Bar. On The 379s it is still detectable but much smoother than the 387s.
