Remaining Southern Slam Door Stock

Hi All,

I’m not sure if there is a tread on the remaining southern slam door trains?

Would anyone know if there are any unrestored carriages of either the ex CEPs, VEPs, CIGs or TCs still remaining and where would they be located or stored??

If anyone has any information I’d be very grateful.

I apologise if there is a thread somewhere within the forums.

Hello @Rail_Sussex there is also the restored Hastings DEMU which, in addition to the narrow bodied 201/202 stock, has a former 411 4-CEP trailer second and also a former 422 4-BIG trailer buffet.

Hello @Rail_Sussex there is also the restored Hastings DEMU which, in addition to the narrow bodied 201/202 stock, has a former 411 4-CEP trailer second and also a former 422 4-BIG trailer buffet.

They've also got a couple of Hampshire motor coaches as well I believe.

3CIG 1498 is located in Ireland, was going to be used as a glamping site, hasn’t been touch in years .

Pretty sure there are a couple of CIG vehicles (in faded SWT livery) still at Barrow Hill (Driving trailer + intermediate trailer).
They are from formerly complete units that were originally ’preserved’ at Eastleigh with the intention to return them to the mainline, they were subsequently used for parts for the Brighton Belle project.

Wow that's really interesting to know, I knew it had gone off to Ireland but didn’t realise it wasn’t used for its original purpose. Maybe it’ll come back to England one day!

I helped edit this, this covers the majority of EMUs carriages that are still around. Bar a couple that are not preserved, i am hoping to get a upto date copy out this year. Mainly down to the Glasgow Subway Carriage Preservation. What it does not include is as follows "Any item that is at a private site for non-operational or non-heritage based commercial use and which is not accessible to the general public is not listed in this document. Neither are any vehicles exported overseas regardless of their status with their new owners. Also excluded are items that are stored, pending disposal or in departmental service with a part of the former British Rail or London Underground networks. Non powered trailer car units such as the 4-TC and Gatwick Express stock are not listed as they rely on another traction unit to be operated which need not be electrically propelled. The register does not list any fragments of EMU vehicles that survive such as cab or body sections or underframe only, the complete vehicle body must be extant to be eligible for inclusion. Finally vehicles that have, at some time in their life, been converted to temporarily run in EMU formations but have subsequently been converted back to loco hauled format are also excluded"

Not anymore. The final one moved to the East Kent Railway. Some of the VOP carriages from 3905 where recently scrapped (pic attached). It needs a lot of work

I know a three of the carriages from 4VOP 3918 are still around, as is the 3CIG in Ireland. Network rail have a couple they used from the ultrasound train. Ex 4REP DMS carriages from 3015/2015 and two 4CIG motor coachs. One from ex 1393 and the other from 7337. You can also include the body shell from the driving trailer of 1399 as (owned by the Cab yard).

3CEP/4BEP unit 1198/2304 is split in the moment - its buffet coach (which came from sister unit 2305) is at Cockshute sidings while the rest of the train remains at the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway, two years after their lease had expired.

On a point of order... the class 317 vehicle 71621 at Oracle Thames Valley Park... wouldn't that fall under "private site for non-heritage based commercial use"? It's not accessible to the general public as far as I know; it's not really preserved either.

We are seeking clarification. From what we are aware it is a public location but this is not 100%

No, that is 3905. The only carriage that survives now is 76397 Driving Trailer.

62287 Part of UTU2 an ex class 421 MBSO previously allocate to Fratton
62384 Part of UTU1 an ex class

999606 on 3Q24 stated as 75mph air con EZ5/Y allocated to Brighton Lovers walk formerly 62356 a class 421 MSO
But why restricted to 75mph ?

You won't hear much about it because it's privately owned and nothing much has progressed in 20+ years. Still in Connex livery.

I know the owner of 1753. They've also got the buffet car from the former GCR unit.
And a Tube train too.

I was talking to one of the Accurascale team about Southern EMUs in general and CIGs especially.

All these cars are now at Warcop on the Eden Valley Railway, having arrived in late April/ early May.
