Can we expect Northern to touch up the ex LM 150/1s with new upholstery and repainted grab handles if lucky? Northern rarely do major internal work to their trains so I won't hold my breath

I'm pretty sure I saw a 150 this morning but was unable to see the livery. Just got a glimpse from a XC service passing through Eastleigh in the up direction at about 1155, this unit was waiting to come off the Chandlers Ford branch, so all I could see was the cab front.

Now it shouldn't have been a FGW unit on that route, so can anyone with access to the magic box work out what it was?

Thanks in anticipation...

Could of been one of the units stored at Eastleigh going for a weekly spin.

Indeed it should have been. 5Z69 1022 Eastleigh Works-Salisbury and 5Z70 1110 Salisbury-Eastleigh Works should have ran yesterday. FGW do use the Chandlers Ford line occasionally, there's at least one booked service a day and when there are problems affecting the normal route services run that way.

Looks like 150001 is having a rest as the 06.45 Worcester - Dorridge is a 172+1(3 again today.
150109 was out on it's own on the 18.23 Dorridge - Snow Hill last night though (28th).

That would be it then, the time fits nearly exactly.

I did say it wasn't a normal FGW service - up until a couple of years ago there was an FGW unit ran round that way for route retention in mid afternoon - it was an extension of one of the Westbury - Southampton shorts - but AFAICR it stopped when SWT took over the Salisbury stopping service.

I think FGW's route retention runs over the Chandlers Ford line are now all very late or very early - I don't think any are in passenger service, although passengers do go via Eastleigh on a particular late night service, without it appearing as a call in the timetable.

Have 150 and 172 ever attached to each other on busy times?

Or 153 for that matter?

Probably Tysley, considering it should be one of several 150s taking a spell of execution from exile until Bombarby get's the final 172s ready...It then, will be likely to move staight across down to Bristol for a repaint / refresh into FGWs livery, before heading across to it's outpost at Reading Depot before next May - Seems to be the plan anyway!

The only 172+150 combination I have seen was 172345+150107 on the 07.56 Dorridge - Stourbridge Jn on 15th Sept this year. That was unusual though even in September. TYseley must have been short of 3-car 150s that morning.

ive never seen a 150 -172 combo , after rideing in the 153 and 172 it was a bumpy ride ,like there fighting each other, you notice it more has it slows down , you have 2 differnt types of power and brakeing trying to work together. it sounds odd when you watch a set leave the station too , the 153 is revved to the max ! and the 172s engine revs are lot slower .

and a 150 -172 combo would be worse haveing more power in a 2 car 150 than just a single 153 so the stuggle might be a bit too rough .

0647 was 172 plus 153 today..

Indeed it was, and very busy too (full and standing by the time it got to Cradley). The 172 seemed alot busier than the 150 used to be. They're going to need another 2-car 172 to take the passengers from the 153 when they finally replace it as well. The 0647 should definitely be 5 coaches.

150001 at TYS being prepared to move to FGW next week along with 106, 125 already gone. That just leaves 5/7 & 9. LM now short of units as a result with last 2 172's not due until Jan. Expect short formations until then. Several short formations this week due to failures. LM hoping to hang onto a couple of 150's until Jan but overruled by Daft. Not sure when/if 105/7/9 will get refreshed mow. Understand LM not best pleased with situation to say the least!!

Oh so that means 150001 is no longer staying. It's not just LM that will be displeased with short formations...!

I was wondering if our 150001 was going to change his username, or just move to Reading or Basingstoke... :D

Hmmm, Wonder then, if despite May being advertised - Reading to Basingstoke could go 150 earlier than expected then! As as of today, FGW has now recieved 150002 from Eastleigh, and as 001 is leaving in the next week or so bound for Bristol, give them a month for the pair to be overhauled and repainted, month or two for driver training up in Reading...Feb March next year i wonder?

Refurb of the 150s seems to be going very slowly. 150126 has been in Barton Hill since September having work done I believe. A month for two three-car units to be completed could be optimistic. No reason why one couldn't move to Reading unrefurbished for crew training to take place. Swap the units once the first one is refurbed.

The first refurb always take along time as they test out new ideas (read in railway magazine back in 2009) and after that it will be quicker. I hope that the refurbi is more extensive than the LO units. Plus I can see LM needing a extra 150 for a while yet if this failure rate continues. Why don't they put two 153s together and make a temporary units of them as they sit around a lot!

Yep, like old times at Dorridge last night (1st) with 150106 arriving on the 17.25 Stourbridge Junction - Leamington Spa just as 150109 departed on the 18.23 to Snow Hill!

I've heard that it may be May before the 150's arrive at Reading, until then they may be chucked out on any WoE workings, 001 to Penzance would be nice!

153 354 & 172 343 were in gharge of the 10.25am stourbridge - dorridge today ,seen just leaving brum behind them , all seems well . but on the return run the 153 was take off at snowhill ?. and 172 343 carried on to stourbridge alone , it then formed the 12.25am stour-b, dorridge return.
not shure were but 172 221 was then added to 172 343 to make up for the missing 153 . last week a 153 was also taken of the dorridge run also paired with a 172 . hopefully there will be another 153 will be back out Tomorrow .:D

172221 was with 172334 yesterday on the five-coach diagram. 172343 worked on its own during the evening peak.
