I really wouldn't hang about if you want to sample HST sets on GWR, apart from the Berks and Hants, as the number of GWR HST diagrams are currently planned to roughly halve between October and Xmas.

After the new year HST workings will largely be confined to the B&H and those will be for only about 3 months, reducing steadily through that period.

Are there plans to retain up to 3 x 2+8 HST sets for special events post 2020?

For the first time in what seems ages, there is a complete GWR green-liveried 2+8 HST set running today. Anyone know why? Or is it just chance that the vehicles have been reformed into a full rake again.
Blimey haven't seen that for a long time  Wonder where it is today?

Hello, Are there any Paddington-Plymouth (and return) diagrams that are likely to be long-formation HSTs between late October and December? As well as wanting to relive a journey before the opportunity is lost I suffer from claustrophobia and don't think I could cope with travelling on the new trains- last 2 Voyager journeys have resulted in me getting off after just 1 stop. I have friends to visit

The IETs are completely different to Voyagers, they feel a lot more bright and airy than the GWR HSTs

With the tall seats on the HSTs, the IETs are far less claustrophobic feeling than the HSTs.

And with more tables per carridge
Thanks, with me it's the electronic closing and locking doors and absence of an opening window, rather than a small space.

I really appreciate your feedback and assurance regarding the IETs, I will try one (short journey at first!). However if anyone can point me in the direction of diagrams that are likely to still be HST to Plymouth I'd really appreciate that. I might book 1st class to get a good view too!

Many thanks
David

I know its a long shot, but what diagrams are booked HST in and out of Padd on Saturday morning, say from start of service until about 11:00? Also, is there anything from Reading into Padd between about 17:30 and 18:20? Thanks for any help, I now it is a large question.

Diagrams at the weekend are a mess due to Stoke Gifford having restricted access. If you are traveling to Reading you have an 1 in 3 chance to get on a HST, so just see what turns up

I’ve been told the last diagramed HST on the South Cotswolds woods is the end of October during the weekday. Swansea late November, and Bristol start of next year. Get them whilst they last.

I have a question, and this topic seems as good a place to ask as any...

Are any of the services between Swindon and Cheltenham/Gloucester on Sunday 14th of October booked for a HST? I will be heading to London from Gloucester and need to be in Paddington by about 6pm. Unfortunately the normal Sunday service of five through trains from Cheltenham to Paddington appears to be cut to zero on that date, with a change of train at Swindon required. I would be happy to sample a 9-car 80x if no IC125s are diagrammed, but if possible I would like to get a long train rather than a 2-car DMU (if it is only 2-car DMUs, maybe I should board at Cheltenham instead of Gloucester to be confident of getting seats). Maybe I should also check on the 80x diagrams topic to ensure none of the Bristol-PAD services are booked for a lone 5-car 80x on that day...

Unfortunately you cannot always be certain until the day itself. The regular diagrams are nothing to go by when things are upset by Engineering Work which seems to be ongoing resulting in so many STP alterations. In actual practice, when through trains between Cheltenham and Paddington are scheduled to run on a Sunday, many are cancelled due to shortage of trains crews which seems to be an ongoing situation.

The STP diagrams for that week haven’t been sent out yet.

Are the current weekday diagrams for the Cotswolds Line up to date? Looking to go on a HST on it on any day of the week beginning 22 October.

Thanks for the reply. Oh dear, is the engineering work likely to result in even more cancellations or are they more likely to have crews available to run the reduced engineering timetable?

Thanks for responding. I don't really mind whether it is an IC125 or an IET from Gloucester to Swindon; I'm just keen to avoid a short 'west fleet' DMU if possible and I thought it might be possible to predict whether a train will be Intercity or west fleet in advance more easily than the specific train type. For example looking on Real Time Trains I note that some of the services are booked to use the bay platform at Swindon (which is too short for even a 5-car 80x) but there are one or two booked to terminate in one of the through platforms. Now that it is closer to the date, does anyone know whether any of the services are likely to be formed of a long train or will they all be short DMUs (in which case I'm guessing the trains will be busy and may change my plan to board at Cheltenham rather than Gloucester)?

You will be able to tell from RTT if it is a unit or an HST/IET. The timing loads of a DMU wil show 15x etc and the HST/IET are timed as HST. Note, of course, that you not get the actual class diagrammed but will give you an indication whether DMU or otherwise.

If they are terminating at Swindon, then they are very likely to be DMUs.

Add to this. I went back to your date of 14th October and everything is between Cheltenham and Swindon only and the bad news is that everything is DMU. Please don't shoot the messenger.

Is it not that if the train terminates at Swindon it will be a DMU, and if it goes to London at will be a 125/800? Can't imagine any intercity services would terminate at Swindon.

Most likely to be a dmu shuttle operated by crews based locally at Gloucester.

Is there any idea yet about when the last HST on the routes they serve is likely to be?
