I don't know where the notion that vaccination / previous infection would offer complete immunity from covid, or for that matter most other viruses, came from but it's never been claimed scientifically as far as I can tell.
It wouldn't be the only claim about COVID that was made by uninformed politicians or journalists with no scientific basis.

With Joe Biden declaring he has a mild form of Covid (despite being immunised and boosted), made me think about testing in ’24. Are test kits still available?
I’ve seen kits in Tesco recently at £2 a go. Though their app is currently claiming out of stock in my local store.

They are still for sale in supermarkets and pharmacies at least in the UK, not sure who is buying them or why. The first question if anyone says they tested positive in 2024 (or indeed any time since the first quarter of 2022) is why they even took the test.

When I got the sniffles, it never even crossed my mind that it might be Covid - especially having undergone the full gamut of jabs and boosters. I’ll look at the expiry dates if I ever find any in a pharmacy but I doubt (once detected) if anything can be done except to avoid spreading it….

Source for that, please.

With pleasure!

But, again, one last thing. We don't talk enough to you about this, I don't think. One last thing that's really important is, we're not in the position where we think that any virus, including the Delta virus, which is much more transmissible and more deadly in terms of unvaccinated people, the -- the various shots that people are getting now cover that. You're OK. You're not going to -- you're not going to get COVID if you have these vaccinations.

I think he is getting senile and not stating things correctly rather than deliberately trying to mislead. He has been getting worse recently of stating partly true things.

This was three years ago but yes, quite possibly.

I wouldn’t rule out him being hopelessly misinformed or plain dishonest altogether mind you….

Gentle reminder that this is the thread about the remaining effects of Covid not the general discussion about the US Presidential Election which can be found over here.

Not for free (generally), but I saw some in Boots the other day.
I bought a testing kit from Boots in Falmouth two weeks ago (my better half must have got covid before we went on our jolly hollybobs and it really laid her out for more than half our time away)

Anyway, kits were £1.75 individually - have also bought a box of five now back at home and they were £8.89 from an independent chemist

Partly out of curiosity, but mainly because if they have Covid they may wish to exercise adult responsibility and avoid contact with vulnerable people? Admittedly most people aren't adult, let alone responsible (hence the laws that were brought in to prevent people being irresponsible when Covid was rife, people were unvaccinated, and many were dying or being hospitalised)

I know quite a few people who have had Covid in the past few weeks - in all cases they knew it was Covid due to taking a test.

Should they not do that if they have flu, too?

Or indeed if you feel bad enough to think you might have a heavy cold / flu / covid / etc. It really shouldn't need a test anymore, most people buying them are honestly wasting their money. If you feel badly, stay at home, drink plenty of fluids and dose up. Just like we've done for decades before covid spooked politicians and gave pharmaceuticals a new line in make money.

Yes. But with flu you know you have it and usually don't want to go out, whereas Covid affects different people differently. For some it's little more than a mild cold, for others it requires hospitalisation. So, folk with mild symptoms test themselves just in case.

Yes. I’m 73 and in all honesty have probably had genuine flu only once or twice in my life. You know if you have flu as you definitely don’t want to go out or actually do anything. Every year I have common colds which of course is what most people have.

Don't all other strains of cold / flu also affect different people differently, so the same precautions should be taken whatever strain it is and the test is redundant?

He's talking about COVID disease.

He said you’re not going to get Covid; to 99.99% of people (Biden included I suspect!) that means you can’t contract the SARS-CoV-2 virus. He heavily implied (or actually believed) that it was a sterilising vaccine.

Semantics or otherwise, it’s a moot point as vaccinated people still contract symptomatic infections (in other words Covid disease).

Not to the same degree. Flu is flu. A slight cold could be a slight cold or it could be covid. So, people take a test to find out. No harm in doing so. I daresay if we had tests for flu people would take them too (and in many cases discover they jus have a cold!)

No law against wasting your money. Don't see why some people are making an issue of it.
But wasting the Earth's resources! These things have a carbon dioxide footprint; more plastic waste.

I do what I have always done. If I feel well, I get on with my life. If I feel unwell, I stay at home until I feel well enough to go out.

Well, yeah, when you put it like that.... And I bet they all drive cars, eat McDonald's takeaways and fly abroad for holidays too!

I suppose I shouldn't really comment though. I use disposable biros!

Would the same logic apply to other Corona viruses, such as OC43, and influenza viruses?

If so, would you require tests for those viruses too? Alternatively, is the suggestion that contact doesn't need to be avoided with other viruses than SARS-CoV-2, or is there some other logic?
Admittedly most people aren't adult, let alone responsible (hence the laws that were brought in to prevent people being irresponsible when Covid was rife, people were unvaccinated, and many were dying or being hospitalised)
Are you suggesting that in countries where guidance was prevalent, such as Sweden, people were irresponsible?

That sounds highly unusual. What sort of numbers are you talking about? Do you work in a particular sector such as healthcare or is there some other explanation?

You are suggesting people stay at home if they don't have symptoms, or have very mild symptoms?

Is your intention to suppress SARS-CoV-2, in a similar way that other viruses were suppressed, which resulted in them bouncing back quite forcefully after full mixing resumed.

He said you’re not going to get Covid; to 99.99% of people (Biden included I suspect!) that means you can’t contract the SARS-CoV-2 virus. He heavily implied (or actually believed) that it was a sterilising vaccine.

Unfortunately there is no universal view on what it means to "get", "catch" or "have" a virus; furthermore there appears to be a disparity whereby people in recent years claim to "have COVID" when asymptomatic, but yet wouldn't say they had influenza, or a 'cold' if asymptomatic with any such virus.

It has led to the absurd situation where some people think someone with a mild SARS-CoV-2 infection should isolate, while someone with mild influenza should not. This is completely illogical.

I was simply commenting on why I assume people are still testing - and these are mostly people I know through social media on, for example, weather forums, and more personally in the hillwalking community. Although I also know a domestic appliance engineer who his currently at home having tested positive. My perception is that a lit of people all over the country from all walks of life are testing positive atm.

As for other viruses, we don't have easily available, cheap, means of testing for them. Maybe we should?

Personally I have never knowingly had Covid, but I have never taken a test. I work in retail, but am self employed, if that makes any difference.

I would be interested in a genuine reason why some people seem so angry that others test themselves if they think they have Covid, though. Seems totally bizarre.

That's very odd, as it's no longer normal to get a COVID test. What sort of number are you talking about?

I doubt it's worth the resources this would consume. What would your purpose be; to suppress endemic equilibrium to increase the severity of outbreaks?

Who is angry?

I've seen maybe 7 or 8 people in the past week mention testing positive for Covid. More than I ever noticed during the height of the pandemic.

But who cares? Why is this an issue for you? You dont care about Covid, other people do and still take tests. So what? Why is this an issue for you? It's certainly not one for me. I dont care who takes test for anything. Or who doesnt.
