Relocation?

Do any toc's foc's allow relocation for positions? The only vacancies I have applied for you have to live within 45-60 minutes of the location applied for? Any info will be appreciated.

FirstGroup TOCs certainly do.

I’m sure some others would too if you make it clear in your covering letter that you’d be prepared to move.

First group TOCS (TPE, GWR & SWR) are generally okay if you apply & live quite a distance away. SWR actually ask you a initial question about how you will travel to work & relocation is one of the answers you can tick.

Sadly alot of other TOCS will not entertain you if you live in another part of the country. TfW advertised for a conductor a while back & stated they even wanted evidence of where you live if candidates claimed they live within 45 minutes of the station/depot.

Cross country do. I put it on my cover letter and they asked me at interview. They put in my contract must live within an hour by start date.

To many people saying they’ll relocate (lie) to get a job then don’t.

It’ll only be yourself you’ll hurt if you have a huge commute, SOLs don’t make prizes on your permeant driving record which will follow you round for your whole career.

I think an hours enough on top of a potential 9 hr day already. So makes it 11 hrs ....long day

Try 12hrs with a 90 minute commute - hence why I lodged for 20 months before I got a move 25 minutes from home.

I used to work at the York ROC & one of my former colleagues drove from Burnley everyday. The job involved 12 hour shifts and I cannot imagine a worst possible journey into work - no direct motorway links and I'm sure he drove past himself on a few occasions!!! Needless to say, the job I did was not safety critical, otherwise he would never have got away with it.

I have considered relocation myself if the right job came along but clearly you need to do your homework. For example, when considering jobs in the South, I've found certain areas are completely off limits to get a decent place to live because property prices are sky high. If you are relocating on your own with no partner or family you have to consider - is it affordable & is really worth it in the long run if you are moving away from your social circle?

The job itself has to be proportionate to relocate for too. A trainee Train Driver is an excellent opportunity, but would you relocate for a customer assistant role on 21k?

And I thought a 53 mile commute up the coast was bad... most candidates were doing 70+ from Newcastle!
