I was on a train leaving Temple Meads yesterday whilst a FGW service was leaving on parralel tracks. The front First Class coach and the third First Class coach (with buffet) were in the FGW "lines" livery, but the interiors didn't look refurbished. How many Mk3s have been reliveried but not refurbd?

I'm pretty sure just three coaches (a first class, a first/buffet and a standard/guard) were painted up like this for the 'launch' of FGW last year.

There is currently a complete newly refurbished Mk3 set stabled on Laira depot next to the main line.
Also MTU power car 43176 required fire brigade attendance today at Didcot while working the 08.00 Swansea/Padd.Yet another FGW power car
involving fire,why so many lately.

This indeed is the original three from the launch last April. They are different to the new 'refreshed' coachs. The 'refreshed' ones are the same dark purple base colour. These three 'oddballs' fade upwards with the colour getting lighter.

There are 6 new 'refreshed' ones at Laira, not quite the full rake as yet!!

Only saw them at speed passing Laira yesterday, thanks for the clarification.I believe there was an issue with the end doors on these newly refurbished Mk3s,something to do with not being able to seal off a coach in the event of a fire that was:? holding up their entry into service,is this true.

It was the same power car as the fire the other day then...?

Yes. So to me it's looking more like a 43176 problem rather than a fleet problem, which is very good news.

Back on topic, aren't the 3 launch trailers in vinyl wheras the new sets have the base colour at least in paint? The body fade has gone, and the picutres on therailwaycentre.com looked more like paint for the refurbs.

When was that fire? 43176's most recent fires have been on 0600 SWA PAD at Neath 25/01/07, and at Didcot Parkway on a Swansea train 03/02/07.

I was told that the fire(s) on 43176 has something to do with the fact that an MTU runs hotter than a Valenta. The original exhaust arrangement was designed for the lower temperature Valenta.

43136 was on fire on the Berks & Hants (AFAIK not on a Swansea service). 43176 was on fire on Swansea services at Neath and Didcot.

Incidentally, if there were engineering works between Reading and Swindon, South Wales services would be diverted via Newbury & Bath.

43136 was near Pewsey on the B&H working 1B15, yes a Swansea train, as mentioned above Swindon/Didcot was shut, PAD to S.Wales services were via Trowbridge.
