I don't believe in a great invisible sky fairy, but I do appreciate the important role of religion in developing the richness of our culture over the centuries. Even if religion has generally involved the "powers that be" of the time hijacking and manipulating an ancestral history and moral handbook of a bronze-age desert tribe (i.e. the Bible) to suit their own purposes.
As well as the view "religion just causes wars/arguments", the other side of the coin is religion's role in catalysing some of the greatest cultural, artistic and monumental human achievements of the past. This does not just apply to Christianity, of course.
- Without religion, would we have magnificent buildings like York Minster, Lincoln Cathedral and St Peter's Basilica if these were just the local town halls, tax office or even royal palaces?
- Would we have illuminated manuscripts like the Lindisfarne Gospels or Book of Kells if the scribes were just writing the biography of the local king?
- Would Handel have composed such a stirring Coronation Anthem without Zadok, Nathan or King Solomon, or if the music were just for a new king's signing-in ceremony?
