Reliability of Google Contacts phone numbers, chargeable 01 numbers

Today I had difficulty calling an 01920 number from my EE Samsung mobile phone, picked from Google Contacts. I had entered the number into Google Contacts on a Windows laptop. The 'answer' to the call was EE telling me I had reached my chargeable calls limit, which is zero*. EE eventually diagnosed this as something fouled up in the Google Contacts system, calling a corrupt version of the number. The call worked fine with the number entered manually. I have stared at the contact for typos, none found. It was too soon after the event for the actual number tried to have made it into the logs EE could see. Has anybody else had similar problems with Google Contacts ?

One red herring was EE asserting that companies can make their specific 01 geographic numbers chargeable Is there any truth to this ?

* My plan is unlimited for UK geographic numbers.

All UK geographic numbers (and 03 numbers) are charged the same, or included in minutes if you have them. The Isle of Man and Channel Islands are part of the UK numbering system and look like UK numbers but will have their own charges. 01920 is not one of them.

My guess is maybe that your phone tried to dial a US international call, country code +1?

My understanding is that this isn’t possible. There is a slight catch - calls to the Channel Islands and Isle of Man are treated as international calls by some operators despite their domestic calling code.

Problem solved. I had cut-n-paste the number into Google Contacts using a browser. I must have missed out the leading zero. However, In the browser view of the contacts list, the number shows as +441920****** which looks just fine. The underlying number actually called was 1920******. 192 seemed familiar. It was the long defunct directory enquiries number, chargeable.

User input error obfuscated by Google.
