What do people think of how company's that use their flagship express trains to offset the reliability percentages for example southern with gatwick express and southeastern with their high speed link so people getting a below average performance cant get the compensation they deserve.
Also should southern be able to morph gatwick express into their services what if the government decide to let gatwick Airport take over the running of gatwick express or tfl once platform 7 has been built at gatwick.

Its underhanded BUT worse, the Government allows this to happen. Sure the clowns in the transport department might make sounds about how naughty these operators are but at the end of the day they will do nothing to stop this from happening.

Yep, disgraceful using an average across all services to work out an operators performance.......erm, if you say so. Many operators will still publish figures per route as Central Trains used to with X-city services.

As is usual with this kind of whine, there's a complaint about the system in use, but absolutely no suggestions of what a fairer system would be.

The suggestion would be to do it by route so the orpington to charing cross has nothing to do with the ashford to st pancras or do it by depot performance.
so on southern gatwick express would get a good depot average and also ashford high speed depot on southeastern.

Sounds nice, but that kind of idea is going to make the railway even more complicated and expensive. How "specific" do you want to make it? Should season ticket "compensation" for Sheffield - Manchester travel be determined by all Sheffield - Manchester services? By specific figures for one of the three TOCs which run on the route? By the times for the specific trains that I may get all day (I mean, if the off-peak services all run to time then the peak delays won't trigger anything)... sorry, but it just gets more complicated (more than one depot running on one "route" etc)

There will always be below-average and above-average figures in any set of performance stats, and people who could argue that the glass is half full or half empty.

The stupid thing with Southern is that its almost impossible to keep a 442 to time when its on the AM and PM peaks into Brighton, they just can't match the 377 timings on which they are based.

I know a driver who managed to get the service in from Eastbourne to London Bridge ontime and he got called to management for "agressive driving"...

But both of what you mention are part of the relevant TOCS assets so why not?

I think its fine. All operators handle a number of routes but they are responsible for serving all of them, and there will always be variation in how they perform.

It is claimed that including better performing lines skews the averages unfairly. The other side of the coin is that it is unfair on best performing routes.

Add to that, delays are more easily incurred on the classic lines SET operate, but not necessarily their fault. Cable theft, knock on delays from tighter pathing, and the inability to recover minor delays, are all a feature of the lines themselves rather than SET's ability to run them.

SET can only do what is under their control. Why should they be penalised for having a perceived "easy route" - they still have to run it, provide/maintain the stock and deal with uncontrollable external factors.

Why not? SWT went from 2 Passengers' Charter groups to 8!

You do realise that more time and money devoted to backroom accounting and the endless quagmire of blame allocation protocols now ingrained in the rail industry means less funds available to actually run the railway.
