Could I suggest that Rush Hour Cycle Restrictions on trains be temporarily eased?

if we do have to socially distance on trains, why not allow bicycles on trains?

Round the world cities, including London, are taking the unique opportunity of low car traffic volumes to extend their cycle lane networks.

We would all be a lot healthier. If we do ever return to over-full trains we could re-impose the restrictions.

Because if I commute from a place 6 miles from Rugby into Birmingham with another 3 mile cycle to get where I need at that end then I'm not exactly going to cycle the 40 miles when 30 of it can be done by train.

This would be a great idea!

Are you proposing the permanent lifting of restrictions on bicycles?

Where did I say that? I was simply replying to @hello as to why people may choose to commute by both bike and train

In my case it would be 18 miles by train followed by 6 miles on the bike to my work or 9 mikes to see my son and his family.

i think in the ‘new normal’, there may be more than enough space for bikes.

I suspect if you were clearly a key worker it wouldn’t be a problem taking a cycle at the moment.

However a family on a cycle jolly might be another matter.

Terrible idea. There is nowhere to store bikes on trains without them getting in everyone's way and it would be completely unacceptable for anyone to have to move someone elses bike, which may well be contaminated with covid, out of the way at the current time. People need to be encouraged to leave their bikes at the end of the line at which they have a substantial ride (and the small number that have to bike at each end should purchase a second bike).

What an odd post. Is that a question?

There was a time when I had to cycle 3 miles to York station and then at Leeds I'd have various options but the quickest was probably to cycle the remaining few miles. It would not be possible to cycle all the way!

Right now? Which trains are those?

Unless you are advocating using the wheelchair bay the only way to exceed the usual capacity involves blocking a door or gangway so realistically any train with more passengers than the cyclist on board.

Who said anything about exceeding the usual capacity? Right now on most trains there are more doorways than passengers!

The OP is asking about temporary easements of peak time restrictions (which bar cycles on many routes in the expecation they would be packed with customers) in the current climate.

It would not be rocket science to temporarily remove some seats to help with social distancing, and create space for cycles. Any sensible idea, like the proposal by the OP will always get some negative reaction here. Some people just don't like any change.

I'd be surprised if any staff are actually actively enforcing such restrictions at the moment.

In my experience they’re not. A key worker with a bicycle would have no trouble getting through at the moment.

But on the other hand with the key workers generally being a dream group to be carrying, they all know what they’re doing so it’s almost exclusively folding bikes anyway.

True. Basically, pretty much everyone who is travelling at the moment is someone making a journey they usually make, so they will already have their journey worked out, and if it involves a bicycle on the train it'll be a Brompton or similar.
