Regional TV

I know the digitalisation of TV means traditional TV regions may have changed, and on some providers you can get more than one BBC/ITV region on your telly, but what's your traditional TV region and do you feel your area is well represented?

Also, do you feel you get the right TV region? I know parts of North West Norfolk fall under the Yorkshire & Lincolnshire remit. Other areas for example can't even access their own local channel. Parts of Denholme, near Bradford, get ITV North East, rather than Yorkshire.

What's your views?

It's generally only the news, weather and sport that differs. The main problem with regional TV is that it doesn't cater for people who live near the edge of a region.
I live in Stamford which is in the BBC's East Midlands area, which is mainly concerned with Leicester, Nottingham and Derby, all 35 to 45 miles away to the west, however the natural centre for where I live is Peterborough, just 12 miles away to the east, but in the Anglia region, which I can't pick up. Therefore a lot of the so called local news is not really local, while at the same time events in Peterborough are not covered at all. Similarly, I support the local footy team, Peterborough, but the local sports programmes for the East Midlands region only covers teams that are actually in the East Midlands area, so no coverage of the nearest team.

I can remember Southern TV - I was living near Southampton at the time.

There used to be a guy called Cyril Ockenden or something like that who used to read the weather forecast. They were supposed to operate the music that accompanied the broadcast themselves. Unfortunately Cyril had a habit of forgetting to turn the music off and proceeding with his talk which was drowned out by the jingle.

Allegedly during one show his false teeth came flying out mid-broadcast but he just shoved them back in and carried on.

Football coverage was a joke and they regularly missed half the goals as the camera (singular) was in the wrong position.

One thing I did like was when the logo and jingle of each company used to appear before their programme was broadcast across the network.

And you can again thanks to 'local tv' which is being gradually launched this year.

The first channel, Estuary TV launched from Grimsby in November serving East Yorkshire and North Lincs on Freeview channel 8.

Other such channels will launch this year, the next being Mustard TV in Norwich and London Live in March.

BBC1 HD in Bristol seems to be fed from the Midlands. Local slots are either filled with a message about being unable to broadcast in your area or midlands programmes, so you get things like traffic news warning about an overturned lorry in West Bromwich etc..

ITV just give us in the far SW a pre recorded bulletin from Bristol.

Amusingly Tewkesbury at the far North of the West and Westcountry megaregion is nearer to the Scottish Border then it is to Penzance!

That always amazed me when going to Cotswolds places like Stow and Chipping Campden that despite being in the same region as Lands End, I was actually closer as you rightly say to Scotland.

Indeed - I've been impressed so far - its better than I expected.

On the other hand East Yorkshire always complains about BBC Look North (Hull edition), on the basis its full of Lincolnshire news!

There is also Made Television in Newcastle, Leeds, Bristol and somewhere else. The floods around the Humber will have been a good test for the new broadcaster.

I thought ITV started on the 22nd September 1955, with Associated Reddifusion being the original franchise which was then in turn joined by ATV, ABC and Granada. Then over the years franchise rounds came round to shake the network up a bit. The last round took place in 1991 where we lost Thames (a quality broadcaster as they made Jamie and the Magic Torch, Rainbow and The Bill), TV-am (quite fustrated when Roland Rat went), TVS (of which I remember as I was on holiday in Kent at the time) and TSW.

Of which were replaced by the God awful Carlton, which has as much charm as a derailed class 150 of which our current prime minister also had dibs in too. GMTV which was too 'celebrity-ified'. Meridian who produced Wizadora, Saturday morning Watch Out Weekend or WoW as well as Hornblower (and in theory Downton Abbey too). Then finally Westcountry, who after about five years became a Carlton clone.

I used to watch a lot of Granada Television as a youngster, despite living nea London. I believe we used to receive BBC South East with terrestial, where as we now get BBC London.

You can always guarantee a public transport story of some sorts on BBC London.

ITV only seem to be interested when there's another strike, but their London news programme is on ITV HD unlike BBC London.
