Journey: 1 Beverley to London Kings Cross
Ticket type: EC Advance Valid on chosen train only. Non refundable.

Route: East Coast & other TOC connecting services.

Outward journey: 10 Mar 2013
departs Beverley at 15:17 travel by Train service provider Northern Rail to station Doncaster arrives 16:32

departs Doncaster at 16:46 travel by Train service provider East Coast to station London Kings Cross arrives 18:43 ( seats reserved: Coach: F Seats: 54 )

got from BEV to HULL with no problems.
Train (eventually!) cancelled at Hull as there was no driver.

Next Doncaster train was 16.41, meaning I would miss my connection at DON for KGX on EC.

((THANKFULLY! Hull Trains came to my rescue and the guard allowed me to travel on the 17.30, and THANKFULLY, i got one of the few un-reserved seats!))

To whom do I process a refund for cancellation of the service?
Northern for cancelling the HULL to DON, or EC from whom I purchased the original ticket???

advice please.....

Ask for a refund, where ever you purchased the ticket, however how delayed was your trip at your final destination? 45mins?

Any claim would need to be from Northern, as the operator of the cancelled train. However, their Passengers Charter says they will only pay compensation on a delay of an hour or more.

You are not entitled to a refund, as you were able to complete your journey.

You might be eligible for compensation depending on how late you arrived at your eventual destination.

Did Hull Trains charge you extra?

Hull Trains took pity on me and didnt charge me....
The guard was sympathetic after spending a weekend with my mother for mothers day! he even smiled!

apparently, restrictions on the ECML had already been lifted.

bev - hull arrrived 15.33

hull trains left at 16.35

Is it worth a cheeky compo form?

It doesn't matter what time the train left. What is important is how late you arrived at your destination.

If you don't know then I guess there is no harm sending your tickets to Northern and asking.

The guard spent the weekend with your mother?

Even if Hull Trains hadn't taken you, East Coast would have carried you on their next service from Doncaster, as the delay occured after you had started your journey. You need to work out:

What time would you have arrived in London* if all had gone to plan
What time you actually did arrive in London

If the difference between the two is more than an hour you can claim from Northern. You might get a gesture of goodwill (perhaps a free Northern Day Rover ticket) even if the delay was less than an hour.
