Carswell was a relatively minor person in terms of influence and UKIP. Jenrick and Braverman, ahead of other notable Tory defections, have the potential to do a lot of damage to Farage in a bust-up with him. Also, the infighting doesn't have to involve Farage to damage him; Jenrick and Braverman could easily fight each other over their position in the party if one thinks they deserve the other's position, and/or lesser-former Tories feel they are worthy of a higher role and throw a hissy fit over not getting it.
Possibly, but the key point is that Reform is ultimately Farage's baby. While Carswell was less prominent than Braverman or Jenrick, he was more of a policy wonk, and in a contest, lost heavily - which is why he's over in Mississippi rather than front line British politics.

Given the allegations of sexual assault against Andrew Rosindell, I can also see Reform being vulnerable on that front if they try to play the "protect our women" card.

Won't Farage be thinking of standing down just before the election as he won't be able to handle scrutiny? After all, he sole purpose in life is the be the pub bore, where everything's everyone else's fault; suddenly when he's Frazier (Dad's Army) and put in charge....oh, no sir! That's why he will be grooming - rather than afraid of - Jenrick/Braverman etc to be the next leader.

Braverman defecting is not a surprise. What is a surprise is the length of time it’s taken for her to defect.

No, I think NF will want to be PM. He's about more than just being the pub bore, and he wants power - and I think can see a way to getting it. If he does choose to stay in the background, he'll do it with someone who he thinks he can control - and both Jenrick and Braverman have demonstrated that they are not controllable.

Unpopular Labour, acting like Tories by reducing immigration that the previous Tory govt enabled, polling behind Reform who are popular with those against high immigration, reinventing themselves as the Tory 2.0 party who hired the previous Home Sec who oversaw the high immigration.

Are we living in an actual meme?

If the polling continues to be strong for them and it looks like they'll win the next election I think he will lead them into it, become PM and do it for a bit, until the first scandal, embarassment or whatever then he will quit. He will have the clout from being a former PM then which lets face it is all he has had a lifelong ambition to even become an MP let alone the PM. He doesn't have the actual work ethic to long term be an MP or Minister let alone the PM.

Then I suspect the real infighting and bloodbath will begin with some of the newer entrants like Jenrick , Zahawi, Braverman and whoever else joins soon fighting the more established Reform figures like Zia Yusuf, Richard Tice and god forbid even Lee Anderson for the leadership.

Good, the more Tories that defect to Deform the better.

Can't Forage see that accepting damaged goods into his gang is going to be used against him? Even the dimmest potential Deform voter is going to see the hypocrisy of a child of immigrants demanding immigration stop, and that's before we get on to the past Tory record in government.

Forage the forager, foraging in the dustbin of failed politicians....

No, I think NF will want to have been be PM. He's about more than just being the pub bore, and he wants power money - and I think can see a way to getting it

I think my corrected version is more accurate

I don't. By assuming it's all about money, you underestimate him. Badly.

I think you're being a bit too black and white - I would say he wants both in equal measure...if the money wasn't there, he wouldn't want the power. Tice, on the other hand, has the money - he'd probably be PM for free.

I still disagree. I think power is the main aphrodisiac - money is just a nice second best. And I don't believe Tice has an altruistic bone in his body.

You could be right, it's just that he's such a spiv it's difficult to judge which one of the two is his prime motive, it's close one way or the other. You are certainly right about Tice, what I meant is that he's also on a power trip but doesn't need the money, even less so than farage.

I think it is about the money.

He will want the kudos of being elected PM and he will want the cash from being a former PM. He doesn't strike me as the sort who is prepared to put the hard yards into actually being PM.

You see it throughout all his dealings. He likes money and he likes people with money. He doesn't much care where the money comes from, so long as it does. Take the Davos trip funded by Sasan Ghandehari, "Iranian billionaire" doesn't quite do Mr Ghandehari justice, not with his alleged links to Nursultan Nazarbayev.

I don't underestimate him, people with flexible morals and a love of money are very very dangerous.

Most people's morals start to become flexible when money is involved. And nor do many people care particularly where money comes from. If most of us, for example, suddenly received thousands of pounds unexpectedly into our bank account, we wouldn't stop and ask where it came from. We'd immediately be booking a 5 star holiday with it, no questions asked.

I still think you confuse two separate things. I think he's more willing to work than you give him credit for, but I share your views of his ability to do the sustained hard graft of being PM, and of his love of money.

But "love of power" is not the same as "love of doing the hard work of the job". He wants the authority and the kudos that go with it, and will gladly take the money that he expects to follow. But they are in that order - he would not be doing what he does if it were just about the money.

Both Reform UK and the Green Party are considered realistic challengers in Gorton and Denton, but both parties have started their campaign with gaffes: Lee Anderson went to a venue in Angela Rayner's constituency to launch Reform UK's campaign, while the Greens' Ellie Chowns spelt the place wrong:

Lee Anderson has been torn apart after it emerged he had been campaigning in the wrong constituency ahead of the Gorton and Denton by-election.

The Greater Manchester seat became vacant last week when its MP, former minister Andrew Gwynne, resigned on health grounds.

The Greens, Labour and Reform UK are now locked in a three-horse race to win the by-election, which will take place on February 26.

But Reform MP Anderson’s attempts to connect with voters in the seat got off to the worst possible start.

According to photos he posted on X, the Ashfield MP actually spent the weekend campaigning in the neighbouring constituency.

The Reform chief whip was pictured outside Stanley House Function Rooms – a building which is in former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner’s Ashton-under-Lyne constituency – with party supporters.

But Anderson’s caption read: “Gorton & Denton. A cold but productive day in what will be a hotly contested seat. Reform UK fear no party. Bring it on.”
It's been suggested Labour moved fast on the by-election to try and impede other parties getting campaigns running properly. Gaffes like these back that up.

Ah, I see your point. And yes, probably; there are easier ways than politics to make a big pile of cash.

Matt Goodwin, GBNews presenter and Reform candidate, has some interesting views about people from ethnic minority backgrounds. Apparently being born in the UK and living in the UK doesn't make you British.

Goodwin has been criticised for claiming recently that people from black, Asian or other immigrant backgrounds were not always British, saying: “It takes more than a piece of paper to make somebody ‘British’.”

44% of the people in the constituency identify as coming from an ethnic minority background.

So... if you're the child of a immigrant... you are still not welcome...? Just asking for a couple of friends... Might have been in the news recently... Might now be Reform members...

Apropos Matt Goodwin, Farage posted on X yesterday that "Matt is coming home to Manchester".

Matt is from St Albans, was raised in the south, and lives in Hitchin

Interestingly, Reform were inviting applications to be their candidate, for a fee of £125, when in all likelihood the decision had already been made. There's always a grift with these lot

One positive outcome of the Gorton & Denton by-election might be if the winning candidate promotes a better train service for Denton and Reddish South stations, possibly from Stockport to Manchester Victoria and vice-versa. Andy Burnham might even be persuaded to take this forward as part of his growing "Bee Network".

I think you grossly overestimate the ability of Reform voters to identify hypocrisy...

Isn't that route pencilled in for a tram or tram/train service? If so, the new MP could only cancel it rather than anything else (if that's in their powers?)?

I saw this quote on Facebook... turns out it is real

My hon. Friend is absolutely right. The hon. Member for Clacton (Nigel Farage) is warmly welcoming people who spent 14 years undermining public services, who wrecked the economy, who botched Brexit, and who were booted out by the British people in 2024.

and Reform’s latest recruit was so bad that she managed to get sacked by Liz Truss.

As noted in the Parliment website!

Quite a burn!

Perhaps Goodwin is claiming to be a second generation Mancunian? Or maybe….

I can't remember where I read it now, but I did laugh at him being connected to the area because he delivered takeaways there while at university. Why try to play up a guys local links if they're so tenuous, it just looks silly. My wife said she might run because her car broke down on the M67 once. She had to spend a few hours at the local Sainsburys.

She already sounds like a better candidate!

Just about anyone would be a better candidate than him. A nasty, spiteful little man with close to zero experience of the real world, given to telling lie after lie to suit his and his paymasters' agenda
