Hello.

I just got a call from SWT regarding my references , they will ask my current employer but they can't use my previous one because it's a family business
I was working for my father in law for a few years and unfortunately they can't use that.
Been told that they will need a professional reference now from a solicitor or a teacher. Which I don't have because I never went to school in England and I never needed a solicitor.
Well it doesn't look good at all
Passed all my interviews and assessment now I will fail because I don't have a professional reference
Any suggestion ? Who else can I ask to be a reference ?

Have any buddies in the police force or a doctor willing to vouch for you. Wink wink.
Even a teacher not from England..... Emails/PDF etc

Just because you never needed a solicitor doesn't mean you can't use one for a reference. They will charge a fee though but if this is going to be a stumbling block to your future career it may be worth a bit of outlay.

It's like getting a passport photo signed, there are certain professions that are deemed suitable to do this as they are (supposedly) trustworthy and "fine, upstanding members of the community" usually people such as teachers, doctors, police, magistrates etc.

Have they stated that the reference from a teacher has to come from England (or the UK)?

When I worked in recruitment we could accept a reference from any relevant teacher/lecturer provided that it was in the English language.

The reference I believe must be from a professional person who has personally known you aver a certain period of time.

The solicitor reference would simply be "This chap appears to be a good boy and has not done aything wrong" but is better than nothing.

Having said that you can ask anyone else who you are not related to if they would write a reference from the firm. They do not have to be your direct employer / supervisor within the firm. They should accept that.

You're right, and it would really be more of a character reference than anything else.

She said she will try to contact my employer before my father in law and hopefully they can give her a reference.

She didn't mention if I can use my teachers back in Hungary, and i forgot to ask. But she said she has to send a letter out with a form to fill out. So I don't think that would work because not to many people speak/ write English in Hungary.

Also said if there is any more issues she will call me back, so fingers crossed that she can contact with my old employer

It's probably best to leave it with them for now, then, and hope everything works out OK.

Passport rules have changed.

Your doctor, dentist etc are suitable as a referee.
