With hotter spring and summer conditions becoming more common, the older BR‑era diesel fleets are increasingly uncomfortable for both staff and passengers. These units are likely to remain in service for another 5–8 years, so practical, cost‑effective mitigation measures are worth considering.
To start the discussion,. I'll suggest the below:
- Fit Air conditioning or Air cooling although this will be costly with the limited time the fleet has left in service and is likely a none starter.
- Upgrading existing air con for example in class 158's although this is likely to be too costly.
- Fit window tinting to reduce sun coming into the coaches including the drivers cab if it does not interfere with driving abilities.
- Paint the roofs white to reflect heat.
- Fitting Fans in driving cabs.
