A thread to discuss rerouting the roads around Kirksanton on the Cumbrian Coast Line to reduce the need for gatekeepers along this route.

Kirklington is on the A5093 west of Millom and passes over the line twice before and out of the village.

My suggestion is to use farmers land to align the A5093 to the North of the railway and decide which of the two remaining crossings to use as an access to Kirksanton.

I'll open up the thread for other improvements that can be made on this line to reduce the amount of gate keepers required.

I was looking at old maps of Kirksanton only yesterday. One problem is that the railway runs below an escarpment that, I think, comes fairly close to the line. This would add to the cost of a new road and possibly make it uneconomic.

Back in 2018-9 I heard there was a proposal to modernise Saltcoats crossing, just north of Ravenglass (currently manual gates with gatekeeper, no signalling, gates normally closed against road.) The proposal was for barriers, monitored by CCTV from Drigg box (next box north) with additional signalling. This sounded to me like overkill, as I would have thought a locally-monitored barrier crossing (flashing white light to trains) would be adequate - the train sight lines to the crossing from both directions are good, and the majority of trains are DMU passenger trains slowing for/accelerating from a stop at Ravenglass, so the inevitable speed restriction over a locally monitored crossing wouldn't impose much of a time penalty. Anyway, nothing seems to have happened since (covid ?, financial constraints ?). Anybody have any updates on the situation?
