Apparently a speed restriction has been imposed over defective track on this line, which has also led to all Hastings-London Bridge diversions this way terminating/starting at Tonbridge:

Description

A speed restriction has been imposed over a defective track between Tonbridge and Redhill. This weekend, Southeastern services between Hastings and London Bridge are scheduled to operate on this diversionary route as engineering work is taking place.

Until further notice, those services that were scheduled to run on this diversionary route will instead now be revised run between Hastings and Tonbridge only. From Tonbridge, customers can board alternative connecting trains to London Victoria.

Disruption is expected until the end of the day on Sunday 11 October.

What has happened?

Hastings to London Bridge services are being heavily delayed because of ongoing speed restrictions between Hastings and Tonbridge / Tonbridge and London Bridge.

Trains are being delayed but up to 45 minutes.

In order to provide a better more robust service the decision has been taken to run services from Hastings to and from Tonbridge only until the end of service on 11 October 2026.

How does this affect my journey?

Trains from Hastings will not run past Tonbridge.

What should I do?

Trains will terminate at Tonbridge, connections to London Victoria are available from here.

It is recommended to alight at Tonbridge and catch a train to London Victoria where you can then use your ticket at no extra cost between London Terminals on the London Underground.

For customers already in London please go to London Victoria and catch a train to Tonbridge where you can then change for a train calling at all stops to Hastings

Some customer may also find it beneficial to go to London St Pancras International where your ticket will be accepted on the highspeed services via Ashford International.

We also have ticket acceptance on local bus 402 between Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge.

Please check before you travel and allow extra time to complete your journey.

20mph has been in place for 2-3 weeks now over a long section between Edenbridge and Godstone (up line).
30mph in place for about 1 week now on down line over similar long section.

This has been playing havoc with peak hour services on short turnrounds, with trains running up to 40 minutes late with accumulated delays, and some omitting certain stops. Adding an extra 2tph in each direction on this line was never going to work! Tonbridge was rather chaotic this morning while the London Bridges were being pulled.

Are there any plans to try and fix this? I notice there's a late night closure next week on Friday night over this route, but if the restriction is a lengthy distance I doubt one night would do it.

Trouble is, most of the time it's only a (very) secondary route so presumably low priority for attention, especially with all the other sections requiring remedial action across the region. It's only when there's disruption, like this weekend, that it reverts to its former mainline status and the shortcomings are more widely felt.

Hope it is fixed soon though as the delays and missed connections are becoming a real pain for regulars!
