Red/white switch thingies underneath platforms

What are these?

For years I've seen them dotted around under the platforms at Acton Main Line, Ealing Broadway and West Ealing stations. When I was an ickle one, I used to think "If 'up' means the platform is level, then 'down' must mean everyone falls onto the track".

My guess is it's serving exactly the same purpose, just instead of saying 'top of rail is here' it would be something like 'top of rail is 1003mm below here'.

If its ATG track then they will be along the entire route. I dont know if its ATG at Manc Pic but we have them all the way up the Fast lines North of Primrose Hill
