Hi Keith,

Just wondering what you mean here by 'sets' and the way you have written out which 'sets' you have scored. They never run in formations of less than 2 or more than 3 car consists yet you have singles and quadruple formations written out.

Also you say you need another 86 to complete the fleet but added to the 32 you have scored that makes 118 but there are 149 vehicles in the fleet..

Am I missing something here?

Yes you are...he has merely posted them in numerical order, confusingly starting a new line for each series of 10.

Thanks for your questions and apologies if I have confused you with my terminology etc. By "set" I mean each two car unit with a unique number, e.g. 43 - and I am aware that the cars are also labelled A and B. My criteria is to travel (preferably one mile or more) between two stations in each individually numbered set/unit.

While current formations always have two or three articulated units/sets or whatever you might call them, remember that when the DLR opened and used the original P86 stock, a single set/unit etc was used in each train. (The P86 stock, and the later P89 stock, carried numbers in the range 01 to 21 and should not be confused with the units currently numbered in the range 01 to 16.)

As for the listing of what I have "scored", you will see that the list is in numerical order with a new line for each block of 10, for example all the 13x units are on one line with the 14x units on another.

As for my arithmetic, yes I am fully aware that there are 149 set/units in the fleet - I had already scored 31 of them when starting to post to "Red Pen". I am now down to the last 13 so when I get bored, I'll head over to the DLR and ty to track down the remainder.

Why not? I've got practically the entire UK carriage fleet for haulage ( should really be "trailerage" shouldn't it?! ) myself, with gaps only in the charter / special rakes area really.

I must admit I do note any non-powering locos, DMU / EMU cars within the consist of any train I am travelling on, although obviously don't count them for haulage.

Cheers for that info on how you do things, though I was discussing how you call a vehicle a '2 car set' just now with me lass today(shes a PSA on them) and they just class it as 1 vehicle - hence the 2/3 car consist I mentioned. But if thats what your used to then all good

No particular highlights in this lot apart from getting my last Bakeloo line unit (3465) on a totally unplanned mission. Like others who post here, 91s are proving to be elusive with three of the s*ds to go. Also, started the assault on my Scottish units but there's still a long, long way to go in that department.

Anyway, 12099 and D3201 were added to my list at the SVR gala last week.

I use a google docs sheet to record all this - it's very rare I travel behind a loco, so this is pretty much all EMU and TfL stuff. I only record units I've travelled on, with the exception of classes that started being introduced to service on lines I travel on, since I started recording. (That's basically just the LUL S8 and S7 stock at present).
It took roughly 12 months, but I managed to record travelling on every 357 across both the subclasses. Do I win anything for that?

I came fairly close (132 out of I believe 149?) to recording every DLR unit too, but now I no longer work in the docklands, I imagine finishing that off is pretty much a lost cause!
(I should perhaps point out, for contemporary tube stock I record each unit for its pair - since I travel in the same half of the train on most regular journeys, and would never see half the units on some lines otherwise - so for example 96405 would just be recorded as '3' in the sheet, as 96005/96006 at each end would originally be set number 3 - even though the 96TS are no longer joined in order like newer stock)

I didn't actually realise this was a done thing, will be taking more of an interest in future.

Not a bad month overall. One of the highlights was scoring 31438 at the Epping Ongar Railway - this was only one of four extant 31s still needed, just 31018, 31289 and 31452 to go. Last time I had a winning 31 was way back in March 1995 when 31432 got the red pen treatment.

If there's prizes going for that sort of thing, can I put in a bid too as I have already managed all 86 Class 319s this year. And the scary thing is, all have been had on the regular trains to/from work. In other words, without trying.

There are probably many regular commuters in the South East who will manage to clock up rides on every member of their local class/sub class of unit every year while undertaking their regular commute

Yeah I've never actively seeked out a unit anyway, I don't have access to the info of which unit is working what times, and besides, being an IT worker, a lot of my travel is 'spur of the moment' or varying times throughout the day - as hinted at by the various different services in that list earlier (whereas most people probably use the same two diagram numbers every day).

Yes, I record every rail journey along with distance travelled. So cleared for 10 miles is exactly that - I have travelled 10 miles or more with that particular item of powered rolling stock. My aim is to travel at least one mile with every unit but there are also upward benchmarks of 10, 100 1,000 miles etc but I do not set out at present to ensure that everything is logged for 10 miles or more. There's one unit - a 319 - which is currently on 2,400 miles and most of those 2,400 miles can be attributed to the daily commute!

I do not actively go out for modern freight locos (60, 66, 70, 92 in particular) but will log them if they come my way. Likewise, I have never really chased shunters in the past but with less and less to go for, that's a new avenue of approach for me to look at. I also try to get 100 miles or more with passenger locos but again that's a "nice to have" rather than a "must have".

Interesting - I think I may follow suit on this one. Obviously I can't go too far with backdating but since I keep the logs of what date I travelled on which unit (which I'd never made any use of until now) I can actually backdate to pretty much as far back as Oyster journey history allows, since the vast majority of my NR travel is recorded on Oyster (such that the few remaining paper-ticket journeys were memorable enough to remember exactly where I went).

Are you using an automated system to add the distances up? Right now the only way I could think about going about it would be to use railmiles, which could be tricky as I've done London Bridge - City Thameslink a few times, which I don't think is on there.

Coming perilously close to 'classing' the 96TS (only recording halves as full sets for reasons stated earlier) - only sets 28 (055/056) and 40 (079/080) to go.

Edit: Just remembered, I finally ticked off my last missing sighting of the S8 stock this time last week (3rd October) - and to top it off, it was the unit I travelled on, purely as it was the first to arrive - 21087/088 in advertising livery.
