'Red Pen' 2011

As the year comes to an end, I thought I'd work out how many 'new locos' I've had for haulage in 2011, and found it comes to 51 (this being UK mainline or ex-mainline locos). Pretty successful I think, considering I don't actively chase 66s, although I'll happily ride on them if they are there. Among the highlights:

- Finallly having 37409, the only one of the 31 37/4s I'd never previously had. The single gap had been there for quite a few years!
- Getting my last 57/3, which was almost (but not quite) as problematic as my last 67 (014) had been the previous year.
- Making a good inroad into the operational 'kettles' I'd not ridden behind. Got 22 new ones, and now down to a dozen or so.

A few years back, I managed Swanage, Appleby Frodingham and the NYMR in one weekend - including 2 days at the NYMR!

As theblackwatch knows, 2011 has certainly been a red pen year for me. Getting a car alongside covering all my lines and taking a much greater interest in the charter/preservation scene has meant that my "empty book" is slowly getting things in.

Had a grand total of 224 new locos this year in a total of 11 countries.

Most was Germany with 60 new closely followed (surprisingly for me) the UK with 57; probably down to the fact I have visited far more preserved railways this year than I have done for a long time.

I've had more new haulages than I care to count this year, but a surprising amount of locos were scooped. I know 67012, 67015, 37229, 37510 were all in there for locos on the mainline, with loads of preserved ones and a megaton of MUs. If I had my original moves book for 2011, I'd get the figures all in but to be honest I haven't and cannot be bothered to spend ages on RailMiles working it out.

However, I intend to try and get some details noted for 2012. Hopefully someone will remember to make the same sort of thread come the end of 2012. Or the end of the world, should it actually happen

57314 was the only loco in my list which I had on a service train. Pretty much at the end of 2010 (Dec 23) I had scored 90045 on a service train which was something of a highlight as it was my 50th 90 (and had been the only one I needed for several years) and I also reached another milestone on my way back from that outing.

That's why, in my book, it is the frame I go by!

Regarding the vexed question of whether to count re-engined locos or not, I usually don't count it for a second time if it keeps the same class number though even this is a minefield.

In Austria you have, for example, 1042s and 1044s; the ones that went though works and were fitted with push-pull and associated gubbins became classes 1142 and 1144 but kept the same individual number (ie 1044 018 became 1144 018) - I do not count the ones that I have had as a 11xx as new if I had them as a 10xx. Suppose that scenario is not that dissimilar to the case of the 31s and 37s that became /4 when fitted with ETH or the 37s that became /5 or /7 (don't count them twice either).

In the case of the 57s, 57304 is the only 57/3 I still need, to my mind it appears to be "cheating" to say that I have cleared the sub-class when I only had it as 47807........

The situation with class 50s could be quite complex. There were 50 locos (51 if you include DP2) but only 49 power units. Therefore it could be argued that it was only possible to have 49 class 50s for haulage.

My view regarding the 57s is that they were totally rebuilt using the bodyshells of class 47s.

Other re-engined locos such as class 37/9s and HSTs kept many of the origional components (in the case of 37/9s having identical components to other refirbished 37s).
