This might bring back memories for some people! Situated just outside Manchester Victoria - never visited the site myself and its now defunct of course (closed 1989) but it looked a lively & fascinating place, rather like a rolling stock marshalling yard. Would it have any use these days? A DMU stabling point? Although it would be nowhere near as extensive as it looked here.. crikey 1988, doesn't seem that long ago does it!

Probably little use at the moment for a DMU Stabling Point given Newton Heath nearby. Perhaps given Northern are supposedly getting 55 cascaded units in the coming years then who knows?

how would railtrack get access to the site, now that the tram extension to oldham is going ahead ?

the route from man vic was disconnected during the resignalling and the trams would use the route from queens park to newton heath.

Manchester Vic East Jn would need to be re-instated. The junction was removed when the area was re-signalled in the late 90s (with the abolishion of all Manchester Vic's boxes). It was once a 'back route' to Newton Heath, but yes, afaik, the trams will block the Eastern route into Red Bank, so, unless they wanted extra carriage siding space coming in and out at Man Vic E Jn, then it's not much use. Theres lots of development in that area atm, and I can see developers wanting to demolish the viaduct into Red Bank in the coming years.

There also used to be carriage sidings at Newtown on the MilesPlatting incline. It would be useful - specially with the new timetable and the platform space at Victoria now being at a premium, especially with the rientroduction of Blackpool services.

Red Bank & Newtown were only the tip of the iceberg when it came to the carriage sidings serving Manchester Victoria.

There was Irlam Carriage Sidings at Agecroft, Queens Road & Cheetham Hill Sidings bordering Red Bank, Monsall Lane Carriage Sidings (Near Brewery Sidings, but on the loop line - these were decommissioned c1914) & Lightbowne Carriage Sidings next to Newton Heath Depot.

Ordsall Lane Carriage Sidings serviced Manchester Exchange.
