He never said he was going to block the up line - just that he'd move down trains around the Voyager using the slow lines. He misinterpreted the driver, and the driver didn't question the signallers plans when he said "no" to blocking the up line. That's the point in the video - communication.

Chris J sent me the video yesterday, i'm working with a M.O.M for tw weeks from Tuesday, excellent

Really scary though.. even showed it a few family members how were shocked at how close it was.
I do suppose the M.O.M should always re-confirm with the signaller and not take the drivers word if he says the signaller has blocked.

Why was the M.O.M going onto the line if he had doubts? he was looking back...

This shows the importance of repeating everything back in communications and avoiding using pronouns like "it".

At the end of the day this shows how safe the railway is - such near misses on the road happen daily while this is treated as a very severe incident.

Wow, they really are lucky to be alive!

No luck, just general backup safety principles like
horning though stations when passing a train in another platform, long horning when life is at risk, clearance under trains and practice diving under trains.

Ouch! That video gave my nerves a shiver! I neally :crybaby: because of the pendo coming to the station at quite a speed and neally hitting the people as it flew past , even more scary was when he said ''s*** its still open''That freaked me out so much , and even when they were climbing on to the platform I was freaked out , Just thought oh (beep) get onto the platform quick , I always get nervous at stations with fast trains on the platform over a 100 and its busy really freaks me!.

As for the signalman a right t*** for not blocking the fast when he should of if there was that pendo and another infront of them they would have been goners!I just hope that signalman gets a punishment for what he had done it should of been single yellow then red not double then green!Stupid idiot!I hope Im never in a situation like that , It would make me go strange and I dont know what!

The signaller did block the (down) fast. The signaller did not hear the words "up fast". The driver wrongly understood that the down fast had been blocked. The clear understanding between them was that "it" had been blocked. There was not a clear understanding that "it" meant the up fast.

"Do you wanna give me a block on the errr, up fast it would be wouldn't it?"

The signalman did hear 'up fast', however, he did not repeat it and mis-interpreted for the down fast I imagine.

Here is what the should have been done:

a)Contacting the signaller
You must contact the signaller and come to a clear understanding
about the locations between which the passage of trains must be
stopped on all lines.
You must tell the signaller:
• your name
• the name of your employer
• where you are speaking from
• the time.
You may have to wait for a suitable time for the passage of trains
to be stopped.

b)When the signaller has stopped the passage of trains
After stopping the passage of trains on all lines, the signaller will
make a suitable entry in the Train Register.
If possible, you must countersign the entry. If you cannot do this,
you must ask the signaller to read back the entry in the Train
Register to you.
You must tell the group the position of the failed train and any
known hazards. You may then proceed with the group towards the
failed train.
You must not start to walk towards the failed train until the DP tells
you to do so.
