Sadly there isn't any money or will to remake a 21, it would be a great machine in preservation despite its unreliability in service
It would look nice, certainly. Are there any substantial bits knocking around that could theoretically start the ball rolling (an engine block or a bogie or something)? Or would it require totally starting from scratch?

Considering the number of "new build" locomotives out there [thinking of Tornado and the soon to be P2 Prince of Wales] how about some suitable period style coaching stock. Not forgetting of course the existing preserved loco's like the A4s needing some streamlined stock......

Got a Power Unit, Cooler group Frame drawings and Commonwealth bogie castings are around. But, other things are more important atm.

I know it's just a pipe dream but I found an old film clip on Youtube and it featured an NBL Warship, a Class 15 and a Metro-Vick Co-Bo. 2 of them we have, the third would be nice.

There’s an engine from a Portugese ‘50’ at Eastleigh Works. The guy who took us round told us that although it’s virtually the same as a 50 block, it’s incompatible and can’t be used in a 50. What better place to start for a DP2?

I know it's not technically lost, but I'd love to see a full APT-P set built, I'm sure they could maybe build it to fit pendolino bogies perhaps or re-engineer the original APT system... ;) :D

Sorry, I suppose I can only dream of such a thing.:(

The reason I'd love to see one on the mainline is that it's the Rolls-Royce of British train engineering. (Well it was close, had they finished development of it)

You could convert a Deltic into a replica of DP2.

Not sure that you could.

They may have looked similar, but the Deltic has two relatively small and lightweight power units, whereas the 50 (and DP2) has a single very large and heavy one. The load bearing structure in the bottom of the monocoque bodyshell would therefore need to be completely different. Changing this would be a really major job,

Looks like 13004 is the best bet.

Anyone got a pair of 08s going spare?

Either that, or you'd need two of them. :) For quite a long time the Scottish locos ran in pairs to prevent trains ending up stranded.
At 1 point the class 21 only had 10 serviceable and they had to operate in pairs as you say so <10% availability.

They decided to convert them to class 29, decided to convert 30 of them as 28 were effectively total losses due to fire damage but only 29 were done as another loco was lost.

Who would want to make one of those, really?

Well, yeah, not much practical use! It's just that the loss of all of NBL's main line diesels has left a big gap in the history of the railway.

I think with a reliable genny, and electrics, and the Power Unit having been rebuilt with certain issues removed, it would be a most handsome novelty on the set. With 800hp totally reliable, and wail like a Scottish Banshee under power! Makes a change from another rebuilt Spitfire/37 although another 37 is fine too

Really, I thought 50044 now had an engine that was imported from Portugal and modified to British spec?

I wonder if it's just the engine mountings? They can usually be modded fairly easily. Two different mount types were used in the Southern DEMU fleet (the 207s are different to the rest), but exchanging engines between them wasn't a big job.

It has, but they stripped and transferred a lot off the previous engine. Not sure of the full extent of this.

I'd love to see an NBL "Big 600" Warship recreated. I had a look round D601 "Ark Royal" in Barry Scrapyard in 1979 and it was an impressive machine..
The NBL Warships (class 41s) seem to have more of a following than the class 42 & 43 versions. I can only assume this is simply because it's a "lost class", because they were hideous (IMO) compared to their little brothers.

Am I right in thinking the WR didn't want the D600s, and got them foisted upon them by the BTC? Very heavy things.

I'd like to see a 47 rebuilt as a replica of HS4000 Kestrel. Anyone have a spare Sulzer Vee 16LVA24?

I too would love to see the APT set at Crewe running again, I believe the hydraulic tilt system still operates?

Didn't the French use something similar in one of their diesels?

I know they can demonstrate it to visitors, but it may only be operative on one car

Only 5 of those engines manufactured so good luck!

French used the 12 cylinder version, same as in the 48s.

I’m sure one had been located in a French power station, though no idea what became of it. The Russians reportedly came up with something rather similar though....

If i had the cash i'd buy a Class 47 and have it modified to resemble Lion as much as possible. Seeing that roar along, white paint all shiny, would be quite a sight.

The TE109 which was more commonly known as DR 130/1/2 (then DB 230/1/2) and other similar classes along with the TEP70 used a Kolomna V16 engine ultimately rated at 4000hp, initially 3000hp, and may bear a resemblance to the Sulzer engine (I don't know if that is the case) but it was built in the 1000s.

Mm, yes. The Coronation Scot set wasn't quite as unique as the LNER efforts but I do prefer the styling.

I'm old enough to remember the GWS vintage set out on the main line, would love to see that again.
