I didnt beat the record (let alone get anywhere near, 18hrs 49mins 2secs) but i gained a bit of valuble info and found out that i really need to rework my route. thanks for the tips and support though

If the WR is 18:35 then a first attempt of 18:49 isn't too bad

Hi, my friend would like myself and her to do a zone 1 challenge to raise money for a charity that shes doing work for. Does anyone know 1) the current time to beat for this or 2) whether stations in Z1/Z2 count or not

1) 2:48:20 seems to be the current record
2) Any station in Zone 1. (So yes that does include stations that are also in Zone 2 - the fact nearly everyone prefers to start/finish at Vauxhall is a bit of a giveaway!)

Ok, thanks, we are starting at Vauxhall then not our intended Aldgate East. Our new route timings show 2:44 approx. so if we can keep to that we will beat it. Not doing till next week so thanks for the help

You will do well to hit 2:44. A time like that is certainly doable - during the closure of Paddington H&C I timetabled a 2:38 - but it allows for no slip-ups at all, and several instances of +1 connections. Make sure you know the layout of each interchange location before attempting this, and as such where to board various trains (to match exit locations) - I am sure that numerous members on here will be happy to help.
Started at Aldgate and did it in 2:54
I can't really see any benefit in starting at Aldgate. By contrast, my 2:38 plan started at Southwark! So imagine how I felt when a previous RUK Zone 1 Challenge was randomly chosen to start at Southwark

Sorry, +1 connections? (Im relitivly ameture at this). I have been to most of the interchange stations over the last couple of weeks to remind myself of their layouts and have printed off some of the harder ones. I also downloaded the Tube Exits app and printed some of them out too but my IPhone is broken so I cant print any others.

A +X connection (where X is a number) means the time you have to make a connection between services. So for example if your train is due to arrive at 1724 and you're leaving on the 1725 that would be a +1 connection (you have one minute to make the connection). They can also be negative but those are of course very risky and rely on either the departing train being late or your arriving train being early.

Well, we did it. But we missed two of our connections (Bank & Kings Cross St Pancras) and so lost 7 minutes from our schedule we gained 2 minutes back on a connection at Earls Court. We were aiming for 2:44 but instead got 2:49. So close yet so far...

Some people may know me as Tangy from the Tube Challenge forum. This recent talk about the Zone 1 challenge has prompted this post.
I am currently finishing off a website detailing all Zone 1 attempts and the times each one was completed. The website can be found at www.explorerticket.co.uk/tubechallenge Whilst the Zone 1 page isn't yet complete (there has been at least 200 known attempts) you can look at the other "alternative challenges" that can be attempted.
If anyone here has completed a zone 1 or any of the other challenges, it would be helpful if you could contact me (via here or through the website) so that your time can be recorded within the relevant section to give a better reflection of all challenge times and find out what the current record is.
If you are chasing for a 02:44 record time, don't bother the Zone 1 record is now 02:40:44 set in July 2012.

I'm also from the Tube Forum, I'm known as Iain over there (Tangy there's also a new full network time of 18:49 something earlier on in the thread).
The current record is 16:29:13 set about 18 months ago by Andi James and Steve Wilson. It's generally considered (I've had nine goes) to be tough to beat. As already mentioned the record has been made harder to try because of changes to the Kensington Olympia services, although there are still services every day, so if you plan your route correctly you can synchronise with these.
Geoff of the website already mentioned and former record holder has created an App called StationMaster which is probably the best one out there for door positions, which makes sure you're bang opposite connecting passageways on interchanges. It's worth looking at them still beforehand so you know how to run and aren't left frantically looking at signs trying to find the line you need.
There's lots of other tips, but people may well be wary of giving away too much information. Here's a couple though - have a look at physical station location so you know which ones you can run between (use an A-Z). You're also allowed to use scheduled public transport - so buses and trains for instance but not taxis. Most routes will make use of both these tips.
Come over to the tube forum though, I think every question you've had has been answered over there plenty of times; there's also lots of other insight plus various events organised with teams racing around the tube.

Seeing as im one half of the record holders i thought i leave a reply
basically as the last 2 people have said its all about the research knowing ur door positions (dont buy Geoff app at £1.99 very overpriced for the app market but its thorough good work gone into it if u just want door positions many others are more reasonably priced or actually go and physically stand on the platforms and count the carriages and doors)
as a few people have mentioned nobody is going to give u a route that is record breaking eh why should they (personally though i will give u this advice if u break it be prepared for a lot of people to hate you for lowering it even more
)
there are a lot of mistakes made in this thread so here are some cleared up record is 16h 29m 13s officially but eh somebody might have beaten it u never know so aim theoretically for lower on paper than it and more u can squeeze for delays etc.
One thing i will mention is that i have helped several challengers in the past SPRINTER or tangy is himself a former 2 time record holder both with myself and im more than happy to give advice or help or even take the day off to go up to LONDON and support anybody to break it not many people can say that about certain tube challengers.
