Also I would like to find a publication on Route maps, displaying track layout and curvatures. I've seen the Rail Atlas of Great Britain and Ireland for sale online which looks promising, however can't find anywhere examples of the pages within. Can anyone tell me if this publication has this detail?

In terms of the question above I've seen the following books online 'ABC Rail Guide 2016', 'British Railways Locamotives and Coaching Stock 2016'.

Location
PTSO or platform depending on the weather
"Traction Recognition" and "ABC Rail Guide" by C. Marsden are two very good introductory books as they are well illustrated and factual.

There are a couple of other good rolling stock books (I think also by the same author who was a Southern man) titled "The DC Electrics" and "The AC Electrics" (not sure if this one is Marsden)

Depends if you are specifically interested in rolling stock, railway operation or just railways in general
