Recommendations for a few hours in Stockholm?

Hi all

Courtesy of me spotting an unusually cheap return ticket with SJ, I'll have a 2½-hour layover in Stockholm next week. I realise this isn't enough time to see much, and I've mainly booked the ticket to experience a few hours onboard an excellent X2000.

That said, it would be a waste to not make the most of Stockholm while I'm there, and after a bit of research, exploring the Tunnelbana's unique architecture and riding the narrow-gauge Roslagsbanan have both piqued my interest.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what else to see with such a constrained itinerary, and which Metro stations are particularly worth visiting or passing through? I'm also up for non-transit related suggestions of course, however I'm visiting on New Year's Eve, so I'd prefer to mostly avoid the busiest tourist areas where possible.

If you've only got a couple of hours, I'd recommend Solna Centrum, Rådhuset and Stadion stations as being particularly highlights, but closer to the city centre T-Centralen and Kunstradgården are also impressive.

The Roslagsbanan can be worth a trip, but tbh I've only every used it as actual transport from the North of the City.
If you're a fan of IKEA I'd highly recommend the IKEA city store about 5 minutes away from T-Centralen, they do takeaway meatballs (think IKEA takeaway)

Alternatively you could get the tram and spend an hour walking around the main museum Island of Djurgården, and there might be heritage trams running as well, I'm not sure. (On the winter break now)

I'll definitely make sure to have a walk around T-Centralen as I'm arriving into Stockholm C. I've had a quick nosy at Wikipedia, and all the stations that you've mentioned are exactly the kind of unique stations I'd like to visit, so I'll try and fit in as many of them as possible.

IKEA for their takeaway food is a good shout as it will be significantly cheaper than anything else in the centre of Stockholm.

On the topic of trams, would the Tvärbanan be worth riding? It looks like an ideal way to connect to the different metro lines to see all of the inner suburban stretches, but I'm not sure if it's something that would be worth going out of my way for?

The Tvarbanan is quite interesting - it is mostly urban with reserved tracks, but also has some street running along with some pretty substantial bridges to cross the various inlets of Lake Mälaren.

The Saltsjöbanan - a light railway running to Saltsjöbaden, an upmarket resort on the Baltic, is also worth a look. Starts from Slussen.

I would say that if you have only got 2 1/2 hours in Stockholm, you are not going to get very far from the Central. At best, if you want a ride on the T-bana, go one stop south on the Red or Green lines to Gamla Stan and walk back: how direct a route you take depends on your walking speed. An expensive trip for the distance, but 2 1/2 hours is less than you think. Otherwise, just wander about the station.
